My brother just put together a 347 and it overheats badly. He has a griffin radiator, a 180 degree thermostat, aluminum heads and victor junior intake, a high volume water pump. he uses watter wetter also. We have heard all kinds of different oppinions about what to do, I figure a few more can't hurt. Its a 12.5 to 1 compression motor. he has a pusher electric fan and wasnt running a fan on the water pump but then he put a flex fan on there and that didnt help so now we are going to put a steel one on there. any help apreciated, thanks, steven Leighty

I've posted this before but here goes again...
The 342" (5.0 based) stroker in the 66 Fastback (4 spd) has a 19x22 Howe aluminum radiator (crossflow), Edelbrock Victor water pump, 160 deg thermostat, 18" 7 blade Flex-a-lite fan on a 1" spacer, a shroud, and stock heater set-up. This engine runs right on the 160 deg thermostat no matter how hot the weather or how long it idles in traffic. I think the fan and shroud have a big effect on the cooling efficiency.

Is the water pump standard rotation or reverse? Cant see why even it griffin rad & high volume pump wouldnt keep it semi-cool. How hot is overheating badly by the way. Using stock or aftermarket mechanical gauges ?... David F.

We use an aftermarket mechanical guage and it gets HOT like 210 degrees and climbing where it shoots water into the puke bottle and out the little pinhole that vents the puke bottle. I just talked to him and he said we are going to take the hoses off and just double check and make sure there is a spring in it so it is not sucking it closed. something has to be out of whack for it to be overheating this much
thanks, steven leighty

What heads? What head gaskets? What intake gaskets? Did you guys trim the intake gaskets to match the water ports on the heads?

I'd lose the t-stat and run a restrictor, about 3/4" dia. hole. You can cut the guts out of an old t-stat or go to your local speed shop and pick up a set for cheap.

Sounds like it could be several things...
1.) Thermostat, as mentioned
2.) Water pump not working (or a reverse rotation water pump with standard rotation style hoses)
3.) Head gaskets on backwards (or one or more of the water passages blocked off)
4.) Some sort of engine problem, like a lean condition or timing too far advanced
5.) Crud in the radiator plugging it up

How does the engine run? How long does it take to overheat? Are you relying on an imprecise gauge (stock?) to check the temp?

I'd follow V8Thumper's advice and run (for a short time) without the thermostat to see if that helps. There's no reason a well running cooling system should let your engine run that hot(but you knew that already).

On my 347, Mexican block, aluminum heads, 10.75:1 comp, three row rad with flex fan, milodon water pump, 180 t-stat runs a constant 180-190 degrees. My only problems is I just blew a heater core.
