Hi,
I have a 66 mustang with A/C. I was trying to remove the evaporator case earlier today. Most references I have seen indicate that the case is secured by two bolts at the bottom of the dash. I started to take off the bolts, when I noticed that undernearth the case there is a bolt coming up from the carpet into the back part of the case. The bolt seems to connect to what looks like a bracket and the bracket is snug into the back of the evaporator case. There are a couple of nuts on this bolt between the carpet and the bracket that goes up into the case.
I took off the two bolts connecting the case to the bottom of the dash and this third bolt underneath the case is definitely supporting the case. I can't see much back in there. Is anyone familiar with this kind of support? I looked underneath the car to see if the bolt was drilled through the tunnel and up to the A/C evaporator case, but I couldn't find anything like what I was looking for.
Any thoughts on how to get this bolt out of there so I can remove the evaporator case?
Thanks,
Dan

Dan,
You don't need to remove the bolt under your evaporator. It's adjustable to keep the unit from bouncing around while driving. Just back it up toward the case. You may have to loosen the nut to do this. But you shouldn't have to remove it. Found this all out when I recently replaced the carpet in my wife's '66.

Dave,
Thanks for the information. I'm glad the bolt doesn't need to come out. However, I am not certain what you meant when you wrote "Just back it up toward the case." Does the case just slide forward off of the support bolt/bracket?

Dan,
The bolt on the bottom of the evaporator is like an adjustable screw/leg for your refrigerator. You adjust it up and down to either tighten the unit or loosen it.
