Hi,

I wonder if it's possible too see a difference between a 73 Mach1 and a 73 fastback. Or is the difference only the engine.

I'm a bit curious since I have a car with a fake VIN #

Well, yes. First of all, there were no engine differences that determined whether a car was a Mach 1 or not. It's mostly (entirely?) a trim thing, the most obvious difference being the grille.

In 1973, the 'Mach 1' had all the following features of the standard 250 CID 6-cylinder Sportsroof (fastback) , plus the following additional or alternate items:

302-2V engine standard, 351 2V or 4V available
3-speed standard on 302 and 351-2V engine, and 4-speed or automatic a 'mandatory' option on 351-4V cars. (auto available on 302 also!)
3.00/1 rear gear standard on Mach 1, with 3.25 gear a 'mandatory option' with optional a/c.
'Mach 1' side and rear(trunk area) stripes.
2-piece 'action styled' hub-caps.
'competition suspension'(w/ staggered rear shocks on 351 cars)
constant-ratio steering box.
black expanded 'honeycomb' grill w/small running horse and tri-bar, black headlight doors.
'Honeycomb' applique between tail lights.
(Bright rocker moldings and wheel lip moldings not avaialable)
Flat (standard) hood standard on 302 'Mach 1', with the non-fubctional ram-air hood a 'no cost' option. The 'non-functional' ram-air hood was standard on 351 'Mach 1's.
1973 'Mach 1's came with the 'standard' interior. The 'Mach 1' interior was optional, as were the tachometer, the three-gauge center panel, console and clock.
The 'Mach 1' package basically included very little equipment in 71-73, although liberal use of the option sheet could 'dude them up' quite nicely.
The functional ram-air set-up was only available with the 351-2V, but not with the 302 2V or 351 4V engines.
The 'shortest' rear gear available in 73 was a 3.50/1, so real drag-strip performance was a thing of the past.

I knew you'd be along, which is why I bailed on my previous answer! One thing I'm sure I've questioned you on before ...

As I know you know, that's not a Mach 1 exclusive option. But weren't staggered shocks only on 351 4V cars? Aside from the staggered shocks I've mentioned elsewhere that I found on a six-banger, and am convinced were a freak, I've never seen staggered shocks on a 351 2V. Have you?

Yeah, the 'competition' suspension on the entry-level 302 2V and optionally-equipped 351 2V Mach 1s was nothing more then upgraded shocks, revised spring rates and a slightly larger front sway bar.
If the 351-4V engine was installed, the 'competiton suspension' would then include staggered rear shocks and a rear sway bar.
This is true of any body style, not just Machs.

Also, all 2-V (302 and 351)cars had a single exhaust with a turn-down tip and a smooth valance.
All 4-V cars had a dual exhaust with turn down tips and a smooth valance, except for 4-V Mach 1s, which had bright exhaust tips on non-turn down pipes with half-moon cut-outs in the rear valance panel.

Many people add the cut-out valance and bright tips to thier cars because it looks so good, but it is only correct on 4-V Mach 1s. All other 4-V 71-73 Mustangs came with turn-downs and a smooth panel. Strangely, even the awesome 1971 BOSS 351 came with turn downs and a smooth panel.
