Maybe I can actually help this time Mike.

Well, it don't say how to take them apart, just how to install. Someone else can tell us how to take them out I guess.

I haven't tried this personally but I have had lots of leaks with my two mustangs and this was with "professionals" doing the installations.I think it has a lot to do with the individual car though, some have some rough spot welds and such that make it difficult to seal.My 66 coupe that I just had painted, had the windshield and backglass installed and removed a few times until they were finally sealed.

William, thanks. I'm not keeping count, but I think you've bailed me out a few times.

I thinl there is a tool for cutting them out, or maybe I've seen folks use a braided wire after drilliing a hole through sealer?

I took a razor knife to the outer rubber and just sliced the rubber lip off. Then pushed a wire (small, 18 guage or so) through at one point and then with a helper sawed the wire around the window to break the seal and lift it out. Depending on how well it was sealed last time, it may come out without even using the wire afte the rubber lip is cut off.

Like Sig said, it is pretty easy to get the windshield out. I was quite suprised.

On my '66 vert, I first scraped off all the black sealer around the windshield. Then, using a putty knife, I gently seperated the rubber&windshield away from the car. I started in a corner and worked slowly. Once I got it started, the entire thing popped out. It was not as heavy as I thought either. One person can easily handle it.

There are little metal clips (at least on the '66) along the base of the windshield. There are little studs that these rest on. I mention these because you may run into a few of them as you scrape off the sealer.

Thanks all. I'll tear into it next weekend and hope that I don't break anything. Who has replacement glass by the way?

I worked at a salvage yard for some years.
And we took guitar string , low "e" string.
pushed it through the sealer , and with two people went around it with a sawing motion, and at the same time apply presure , pushing the window out...or use piano wire

I know 68 and older have a gasket between the windshield and body. You can use a sharp blade to cut the gasket (hold the blade parallel to the windshield). Then lift the windshield out.
I believe sometime in the early 70's Ford changed to glued in windshields. The piano wire technique is used to cut through the "glue".
So the technique for removal depends on the year of the car, and HHStang has one of each in his signature. What is being worked on?

Thanks all. Both are being worked on, though my question was on the 67. What if I screw this up and crack the glass. Who sells replacement glass?

Some salvage yards sell new replacement glass. I bought a new one last year for just over $100 but if you want the Carlite emblem it will not have it.

I've heard carlite glass is hard to get right now, apparently they are having some issue with people distributing it or maybe reproductions being made with their name on it. Regardless, I tried to get one about 6 months ago from Carolina Mustang and the owner told me he couldn't get them right now. The one he put in was a no-name brand. Looks the same, just no carlite logo on it.

You can pretty much count on cracking the windshield taking it out unless you are reallllly careful.

Eastwood Tools sells tools for it:

http://www.eastwoodco.com/shopping/product/detailmain.js p?itemID=2006&itemType=PRODUCT&RS=1&keyword=windshield+removal

http://www.eastwoodco.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=2019&it emType=PRODUCT&iProductID=2019

You can find replacement windshields. I found one for my 73 a couple months ago. I'd have to look at the invoice for the name of the company. They're not that expensive and it's nice to have a new scratch-free windshield.

I got the fastback glass and windshield out of my 71 Mach 1 without any problems. I cant remember how I got the fastback glass out though, that was 2 years ago. You need three people for the windshield, one to push it out and two to hold the bottom corners as not to crack them. I still have my windshield and fastback glass if anyone wants them.

The 65-68 windshields have the rubber gaskets and once you cut enough of it away with a knife to expose the edges of the glass you will not have a problem removing it. A good bump or two is all you need to pop it loose. The suction cup will work good to help you lift it up out of the opening. You can get the type for dent removal fairly cheep and most auto parts stores.
