How much trouble is it to add a vinyl top to a Mustang (65-66) that didn't have one from the factory? Also, what dictated if the car had the vinyl top? Was it part of the luxury interior or part of the paint code or just added to the car?

I don't believe the vinyl roof was part of any package, just an option by itself.I think all you will need is the chrome peice along the top edge of the rear quarter where the roof meets it.------------------ 1968 mustang j-code sprint.13.69@101 306cu.in, stock ported heads, weiand exellerator,650 holley DP,hedman hedders, comp 292 Magnum cam,4-speed,8 inch 4.11 detroit locker...................................................................1966 mustang coupe project.289 4 speed,3.20 rear http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy.html

Dave, The vinyl top was an option. It was not part of any particular package. At least not for the '65-'66 stangs. Shop around for the trim parts. I can also take a closer look at Terri's '66 and/or take some detailed pictures if you need them. This '66 stang your looking at sounds a lot like Terri's. Thanks guys. So, the top just glues in place then it's trimmed out with the chrome strips? Is this something a competent body/paint man could do or is it specialized work? I was scanning through my NPD catalog and the total cost of this (vinyl and trim) is just over $100. Dave, I haven't decided for sure yet on the 65 coupe. This is just part of the thought process along with a luggage rack, styled steel wheels and fog lights. I've also been checking ebay for a floor console for an AC car. Things are looking positive right now but we'll have to see how negotiations work out.

Every factory vinyl roof car that have seen on 65-8's has a trough for the pot metal mouldings that are at the base of sail panel. They appear to be designed to fit inside that area a bit. If a car has no vinyl roof, that trough is leaded in. Wondering how the factory mouldings will fit on a regular roof car. Remember taking a mint set off a 68 coupe and it had that lead seam trough.

Dave, Sounds interesting. Have fun and remember, you can never own enough Mustangs or Classic Fords. You can also look at the pictures of Terri's '66 in the Members Photo Gallery.Dave & Terri ------------------ '65 Mustang Fastback '66 Mustang Coupe '02 Explorer XLT Common sense isn't common anymore.
