I am pulling the engine out of my car and wanted to get the A/C comp. out of the way. I was wondering which way to turn the valves on the stock A/C comp. lines. They are the valves with the aluminum caps on them. The reason I ask is the book I have says counter-clockwise is closed, however mine were fully turned counter-clockwise, and the A/C worked. Thanks for the help, I just don't want to lose all of the freon. Nick

Hi, you must turn them clockwise as far as they will go when in this position you will retain all the freon in the lines, evaporator, and condensor. The only freon you will lose is in the compressor. Also have you thought of changing over to 134? It is a lot cheaper than what you are presently using.

fred,Thanks for the quick response!! I was reading Tom Monroe's book "How To Rebuild Your Small Block Ford", and it said to turn the valves counter-clockwise. It didn't make sense, you know the lefty loosey thing! I wanted to be sure before I dumped all of the freon into the ozone. I'm finally finding some time to work on the ride. It's amazing what a 2 1/2 year old and 6 month old will do to your free time Nick

that was a stupid comment... hope i didnt offend you but dumping r-12 into the atm is illegal. especially the entire cars system. I think you should go to a shop and have them evacuate the system and store the r-12 for you to use later. converting to r-134a is cheaper but doesnt cool as near as good as r-12.

Trash, that was pretty rude. Couldn't you have simpley told/reminded him that dumping R-12 is illegal? I am sure that somewhere in your 1700 posts you have made some stupid comments, but I don't recall anyone calling you stupid. Use a litle respect.

Trash - You need to go back and re-read Nick's post. He plainly states that he was trying to avoid releasing the r12 gas.

I was just trying to double check the A/C valves were in fact closed before I loosened the fittings, because of the fact I didn't want to release the R-12. Thanks for getting my back guys
