I'm in the process of detailing the engine compartment in my wife's '66 mustang. It currently has a dual mater cylinder that looks pretty rusty. I'm debating weather or not to clean it all up and paint it or just clear coat it for a natural finish look. If I paint it, I'm thinking of using the '65 engine gold. What do you all think??? Opinions please. Thanks.

Flat or semi gloss black gets my vote.
Just make sure to use plentyof brake clean on it first. If there is any fuild left on it the paint won't work right.

It was originally natural cast finish. Doesn't Eastwood sell a super tough clear? Painting it Gold would net you a whupping with a wet noodle! LOL!

Pete,
I'm still debating on how to do the master cylinder. But I'm leaning more to cleaning it up, preping it with metal ready and then clear coating it, so it will have a natural finish appearance. Allebit shiney appearance.

... which you need, right? 'cos if you overfill the MC or the rubber seal leaks, the brake fluid's gonna strip your paint job.
In an Eastwood-free country, what kind of clear coat would I be looking for? Presumably automotive urethane would be the usual old stuff. Is there some industrial application that requires super tough paint, in clear?

I would only paint it gold if I was looking to have people point at it and say "what were they thinking?!?"

The way I've done them in the past is to use Cast Iron color spray paint, either by Eastwood or Kryon, then be careful not to spill the brake fluid. Its actually pretty easy to fill it if you use something other than the big bottle o' brake fluid. Transfer some into a small paper cup and use that to fill the master, about 1/4" below the top.

I painted mine with that "Cast iron" paint.

I like the way it looks

Just started the clean-up on the master cylinder and distributor today. I think I will go with the cast iron spray pain after I treat it with metal ready. Thanks for all the replies.

The distributor might look nicer with a cast aluminum color
