I've finally made time to start my cam swap. Taking out a Comp Cams 252H with less than 500 miles on it and going with the ever-popular 270S. Maybe the sound of those solid lifters will drown out the noise from the roller tips on the rockers .

Everything came apart easily except the trans cooler lines in the radiator, had to cut them or they would have twisted like a pretzel. Two hours into it and the new cam is ready to slide in. Re-assembly will take a lot longer as I am going to be doing a lot of detailing and painting of bolts/brackets, etc before they go back on.

So far its been a nice way to spend a Monday morning!

Cam swapping memories, started with a solid lifter one in a 302, didn't like the noise. I then put in a hyd, it was a little too radical. Put in another one, it was fine but had a strange lifter/rocker noise. Finally put in a stock one and called it good. I got good at swapping them.

Scott, glad your getting it done.
I'm sure you'll love the cam. So your roller tips make a lot of noise too?

New cam & lifters are in, pushrods and rocker arms are on but not adjusted. Tomorrow I'll degree the cam and install the chain. Oil is draining overnight. I saw some sludge in the bottom of the oil pan, which I believe is assembly lube residue. I'll either get it cleaned out or drop the oil pan and clean it that way. The whole top of the motor was clean as a whistle inside, so my only problem seems to be at the bottom of the pan.

Hope to have it driveable by Friday night...

You'll love that camshaft

I'd run that profile for a while, wound up swapping to a 282S. When I take the motor down for a freshening, I'll be clearancing the pistons for a 294S

About the 270 grind: I'd installed a 270H in my Papa's 429 powered/C6 Galaxie. Even with gobbs of torque on tap, that profile is really pushing it for a stock torque converter. You may want to look into a looser converter in the near future

Thumper,
I think the cam will work well with the cobra intake and tri-y's. Other than port-match and screw-in studs the heads are stock 66. Rotating assembly was balanced at the time of rebuild.
I've already done the 3.55 gears with Traction Lok (thanks to Alex) and I've got some M/T Street Drag Radials.
The near-near future calls for a valve body from JPT and then a torque converter when I can get around to it.
A more immediate problem is trying to keep the wheel lips from biting my new rear tires, but I think a new set of springs will cure that.

When I had my car painted, I had those razor sheetmetal lips rolled back to a nice tight radius. I had been running BFG 245/60's on the rears, and they did rub just a touch with the loud pedal burried. However, with the lip rolled there are no sharp edges so it's not a big deal. I've since switched to 235/60 drag radials and the rub is no longer an issue. American Racing Touqe-Thurst wheels, 3.75" backspacing. A deeper backspacing would cure any tire rub issues, but I really like the TT's so I'll just have to narrow my rear end housing

Yep, I've got 235-60-15 on the back mounted on 15x8 Drag Lites. Passenger side is no problem, driver side I reduced the lip but there is still a slight concern. I know the left quarter was replaced and when it was welded to the wheelhouse there wasn't enough overlap, so instead of the lip being about 3/4" wide it was more like 1.25", so I cut off about 1/2 inch.

Scott what back spacing did you use with those 15x8 rims?
I have the 270h cam it's real mellow in my 351w. Does have a plenty of power from off idle to 6000rpm.

Todd, when you get your new cam let me know. I'm sure I can find a nice home for the 282S cam.

Backspace is 4.5"
I think there will be a difference in how the 270 Hydraulic acts in your 351w vs. how a 270 Solid will act in my 289. I'm looking forward to trying it! No progress today, it sucks when work gets in the way of more important things, like working on your mustang!

I'm going to put the dual-quad intake on just for test-fit purposes and pictures. Gonna break-in the cam with the good ol' Autolite 4100 and do the manifold swap later.

I have that same problem with work
Dual quads always sound so COOL!
Funny how those cams know what size motor their in.

It won't be anytime real soon, but you've definetely got first dibbs on it
