1989 5.0 HO MOTOR INTO 1966 COUPE - 3 pulley's involved in my conversion (ALT-WATERPUMP-CRANK)Two ways to go here it seems: USE THE SERPENTINE SYSTEM: Install electric fuel pump & relay, drill hole for front dipstick in Timing cover, change oil pan to front sump, install K & N screw -on breather cap on valve cover, block smog holes in back of heads (9/16) Install Duraspark 2 distributor (w/Steel gear) change firing order to 13726548 use blue grommet Control Module with high voltage coil, find a radiator which will work with the reverse flow water pump QUESTION: what radiator will work and fit in a 66 coupe. The original has both INLET AND OUTLET on the RH side. Also, does a return fuel line need to be ran. Will a fan blade fit a 5.0 water pump. I am thinking NOT, so an electric fan will also be needed.-------- CONVERT TO V-GOOVE PULLEY'S Put on an old style timing cover, eccentric, water pump, fan blade , dip stick, Mechanical fuel pump, front sump oil pan and Alternator. Install K & N screw -on breather cap on valve cover, block smog holes in back of heads (9/16). Install Duraspark 2 distributor (w/Steel gear) change firing order to 13726548, use blue grommet Control Module with high voltage coil. Use stock radiator. QUESTION: Is it possible to use the original late model 302 damper (4 bolt - 50 oz) QUESTION: Is there a v-groove pully made that will bolt to the 5.0 HO damper and work with old style water pump and alternator. I see they make a replacement damper with 3 bolt-50 oz for around $160-$175. Is there a cheaper way to go than to buy this damper? Anything I'm missing here.

I'm going to be doing the same thing with my '65 fastback, so maybe we can figure this out together. I'll be going the serpentine belt and EFI route with mine though. The motor's an '87 302 with A/C. I'll be eliminating that and the power steering.I'll look into the radiator issue for you. I've got to get one myself. I remember seeing it somewhere. I'll find it again. As far as the 3 or 4 bolt v-belt crank pulley, I had a 50 oz. pulley on the '71 302 that was is my car prior to the 289. I know it was 50oz., but I'm not 100% of the bolt pattern. I've still got it around here somewhere. hehe. Too many parts.

Thanks for the reply. I just took all of the EFI off of my motor. I'm starting to wonder why I did that. Do you know what kind of flywheel you used. I have read I have to get the billet steel one-$250, it has the metric and standard bolt patterns.

Hey guys watch that switch to V-Belt. Your water pump may be a reverse direction - water flow backwards. Just check it out first.

Have done this on two early (65-6) cars. You need the 50 oz three hole damper and correct flexplate with the weight welded on. You can use all the stock externals including AC This is all for v-belt hookup. On one car ran Pertronix and the other, a DurasparkForgot. Whatever dist you uses, make sure it has steel gear.

mellowyellow-dont you also have to change the firing order on the newer motor to the old 289, 302 firing order

When you shop for flex fans they warn that serpentine engines are reverse flow. I can't believe it would be true in EVERY case but SB Ford would seem to be standard.Juice, you're taking the whole 89 5.0, right? I'd snag EVERY sensor and wire from the newer car.

On the Durspark one, had an 85 Dist. On the Pertronix equipped one, used a 66 rebuilt dist with the Pertronix and later firing order. Also used the Pertronix Ignitor coil. Never a prob.

My dad and I installed an 87 HO (351 firing order) in my 65. We went V-Groove but had alot of fun searching for a 4 bolt crank pulley to match up to the 50oz dampner. Found multiple ones, but they were all very large pulleys (3 grooves) We cut that one down to a single groove and ran it. Used the stock 65 water pump. Kept existing fan/shroud and all that good stuff as well. We used a rebuilt 66 distributor with pertronix. And runs like a dream.I thought about going EFI, but dig the carbed look better. And figured since I was going to keep that original I'd go with the V-groove as well. After a little work with the pulley you can't tell its any different than any of the single groove pulleys we have either. Hope this helps. Luke

When I put a late model 5.0L in my Mustang, I used a 50oz balancer with both 3 and 4 bolt pulley threads so you can use the v-belt system or the newer serpentine belt system. Here is the cheapest I've found: http://www.speedwaymotors.com with part number 91015365-50. It was about $60 IIRC. The balancer weight is a bolt on, so you can also bolt on the 28oz weight instead if you want to use it on an earlier block. Daniel
