It is not a Mustang but uses the same steering box. 64 Falcon How do you remove the steering box from the column?. I can't find any clips or bolts to loosen. Driving me nuts.

If its the same as a mustang, the steering box and the shaft that goes up thru the column is a one-piece unit, they don't come apart. The column is just a sheet metal tube that covers the shaft, and the column should have a support ring at the firewall and a support strap under the dash. Take off the steering wheel and undo those supports and the column should slide straight up and off. The steering box would drop out the bottom of the car along with the long steering shaft.

Thanks for the help. that makes sense now. I am installing a rack an pinion with a Mustang II front end. I guess I can just cut off the shaft and reuse it for the rack.Does that sound correct?

Ditto to Scott's post. You'll need to remove the turn signal lever first as well. If memory serves, the entire turn-signal lever unscrews from the column. I believe there is a flat surface on the lever for a wrench.

Is safety a concern in this car? If so, have you considered a collapsable steering colume (like flaming rivers) to help in the event of a collision (God forbid). That would solve a couple problems at once & look great, too. I let someone else who knows answer on reusing the existing shaft...

For what it is worth, here is a link to Flaming River's collapsable column:http://www.flamingriver.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=68/category_id=163/home_id=62/mode=prod/prd68.htm They are a little salty... I guess safety comes with a price!
