I have a 66 coupe with a 68 302 V8 2 barrel. My problem is that after the engine heats up the engine all of a sudden stops/stalls. After a few mitutes at stop the engine will turn over and run fine for some time then it stalls again. Per the manual I checked for air leaks in the gas line, fuel pumps is working fine and the fuel filters are new. Any suggestions to what could be causing this to happen. Thanks Ed

Sounds like a vapor lock, but I could be wrong. Sorry I can't help more, but the real Mechanic's will be along shortly to give you a better idea. Welcome to mustangsandmore.

How much in the area of vacuum hoses/lines do you have? Probably minimal, but I had the same problem on a daily driver of mine. I went through a ton of parts and money and it ended up being a cracked t-fitting on a vacuum hose (49 cent part after I had already spend over $200 on other parts...expensive lesson). Bottom line, start with the obvious and cheaper fixes and go from there. Sounds like it may be carb related too based on your comments. If everything else is working in your fuel system and fuel is getting to the carb then it may be an internal carb problem...float maybe? Carberators are not my specialty. But these are just a few thoughts for you to ponder. Good luck.

A article in Mustang times stated the exact symptoms as mine sputtering then stall, let it cool down fires right up. It suggested to change the coil so I did, car ran good but as soon as I pulled on to my street same problem occured engine shut off. My carb is a rebuilt ford 2100 and the fuel line runs right next to the radiator hose, could this cause a vapor lock. Any other suggestions?

Hi, if you have vaporlock, your carb bowl would be out of gas, so look down the carb when it stalls and pump the accelerator to see if it is squirting gas in the carb. Being you are in a northern state, I doubt if it hot enough to get vaporlock. I would look to ignition problems.

I have had electronic ignition modules go bad where the car dies (freeway, streets, didn't matter). Sit a few minutes and let it cool. Fire up and go. Happened with 2 different modules. $50 and 20 minutes later no problem for years. Just a thought.

I guess I should have been more specific. This actually happened twice on an 84' Escort years ago. I replaced it with the stock module from Pep Boys. I was just commenting that it sounded like the same symptoms and may be something to check out. Actually, after re-reading your post you said yours sputters. Mine had no sputter. Just died like I had turned off the key. Sorry for the confusion.

Sputtering sounds like a carb/choke problem. After the car stalls, have you removed the aircleaner and checked the position of the choke?

How "new" is your fuel filter - have you swapped it out just to make sure?

Also, how old is your fuel pump?

Choke is wide open and the carb is a recent rebuild. The fuel pump is older not quite sure of the age but it looks weather beaten. I think possibly that the problem might be in the electronic mogule. noticed a spark come off it the the engine stopped right after. so i will check this next thanks for the reply ed

How about a kink in the fuel line. look for restrictions also look for low fuel bowl settings. or low fuel pressure.

Have you checked your engine ground and negative battery cable?

Sounds like you're onto something. Please keep us posted.
