My back window leaks. A lot.

When the paint was done, we called in the local glass company to install a new windshield and reinstall the original back glass with the new gasket I purchased from Mustangs Unlimited. They gave a lifetime warranty against leaks. When I took it back to them the first time they put some kind of black sealant between the glass and the seal. It didn't work. I purchased a new gasket from NPD thinking it may be the gasket and had them reinstall the window. They found rust in the bottom corners and said that that was where the water was coming from and that it would have to be fixed. Drove it to the guy that painted it and we sanded down the corners to the metal and put on a couple of coats of etching primer. Went back to the glass shop and they put a very thin layer of what I'm assuming was an adhesive and reinstalled the glass with new gasket. Charged me $75 because they said the rust was causing it to leak. Well, I washed the car yesterday and the damned thing leaked like a sive. Since the quarter trim panels are ruined and out from under the gasket, you can see the water running down the inside of the car.

Are there any special steps or tricks to sealing the back glass? I'm going back to the glass shop tomorrow, raising a little hell, getting my $75 back and making them fix it.

I had the same problem with my 69. The glass shop had to put enough sealant in the channel around the glass to almost fill the channel completely up and than they made a small impression coming down from the top of the glass on each side so the water can run down the sealant and exit at the bottom corner of the glass on each side. The trick they said is to have no place for the water to set and not run off. Most of the windows leak at the very bottom in the corners. When I took out my rear glass during the body work stage of the restore there was a lot of sealer in the channel and under the chrome molding. Hope this helps.

The thing is that it's not leaking just at the bottom. It's leaking all the way up the sides as well. And the leak is between the gasket and the body - not the glass and gasket.

Mine was leaking in the same places. The glass installer filled the void between the seal and the body all the way around. This stopped all my leaks. I had the glass in a year before I knew it leaked. Car never goes out in the rain but I was going to a car show in Washington state and got caught in the rain before they resealed it and after it was resealed (no leaks). Thats the best advice I can give. I know when they reinstalled the chrome and the sealant pushed out all over the place and they cleaned it up. It takes a lot of sealant. I was surprized how much sealant was used.

On the 69 to 73 Fastback rear window Ford originally used a sealed foam weatherstrip on the lip of the window before the seal was set down. I have had this problem on my 71 and also on a friends 69. I used a sealed foam adheasive back weather strip from the local hardware store it was either 3/4" or 1/2" I can't remember. Remove your rear window and seal and measure the lip. Put down the sealed foam strip and then put the window and seal back in. You need to be careful not to move the strip when putting down the seal. No more leaks
