Well, the VIN number is for a 1968 Mustang fastback, but you didn`t give the 5th character, which will be a letter. This missing letter is the code for the engine. having this letter won`t necesarily confirm if it`s a GT, however, if it comes up as a "T" (200 ci 6 cylinder), that would certainly rule out t being a GT. Most of the engines avaialable in a GT were also available in a "plain" Mustang as well. If, on the other hand, you meant to put a "S" instead of a "5" for the 5th diget, that would denote a 390 4barrel engine, which has a good chance of being a GT. Do you know the body style info from the door tag?------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA M/Stock 302 5speed. Ford only produced 317,404 Mustangs in 1968, starting with consecutive # 100001, so the theory that the engine code is "missing" is not likely. It is far more plausible that the "5" shown is, in reality, an "S". Whether or not the car can be "saved", whereby the majority of the original body tub can survive restoration, is the deciding factor. If it can be saved, the $1,000 is a bargain, simply by virtue of it being an S-code fastback. If it really can't, or would have to be cobbled so much with a donor car that it really would be (in effect) restoring the donor car, then the value can only be determined by the value of parts that can be scavanged from it. This is all from an ethical viewpoint. From an ethics-be-damned viewpoint, an S-code fastback hulk for a grand is always worth it, if the title and all VIN's exist.
