I need to band-aid my motor for the summer (yeah, even typing "band-aid my motor" sends shivers down my spine). Anyway, the problem really showed itself at the end of last summer. In my '66, once the engine warms up, I start getting oil from the dipstick tube. I run a PCV valve in one cover, and a breather w/ hose in the other one. Both hooked up to full-time vacuum ports. I know the PCV is good- if I pinch the hose while the motor is running, I hear the click of the valve inside. The breathers are both a little loose in the VC grommets, and if I try to take up the slack, say by wrapping the shanks in tape to make a tight seal, the pressure in the crankcase will pop one of the two right out (along with lots of oil- it's getting hard to keep the motor clean!).It sounds to me like it's time for a rebuild. Probably bad rings and/or a worn out bore. No smoking out the tailpipe, though. I have an engine and 4spd lined up for the car, but I can't swap it untill the fall. So, what can I do? I'm currently using 10w30. Any good additives I can use; i.e. "rings in a can"? I know it's not the correct way to fix the problem, but I don't put many miles on the car, maybe 800 all summer. Options? OK, this works. It's an old used car trick of mine and once you do it don't change the oil, just keep adding to it. You will need one good oil filter. Two cans of V-8 size Restore Two cans of Alemite RED LABLE oil additive. (says stops oil burning on the lable) Four quarts of Kendall GT 50 wt racing oil Drain out what you have and dump the old filter. Warm up the Restore and Alemite additive so it pours easier. Install the new filter. Pour in the 4 quarts of oil and start the motor. Pour in the other 4 cans of additive while the motor is running and let it idle for about 3-45 minutes. Take it for a hard ride and you are done. This will help seal up your tired motor and last indefinatly. As you consume oil (it will eventually slow way down) just keep adding 50 wt Kendall. I've heard of using 110 octane gas and change your oil to a non-detergent 40wt. to try to get your rings to re-seal.I dont know if this is an urban myth or if it reall works. never tried it. good luck

Alex- Very creative solution! Used car trick, huh? Ones you bought, or sold? Where does one get Alemite Red Label at? I've never seen/heard of it before. Can I mail order it? I'll have to do some serious looking for Kendall GT50w racing oil, too. Might be tough to find around these parts. Also, 3-45mins? That's quite a spread of time! Thanks for the ideas!

DO an internet search for the products and stores in your area that carry them. Usually Pep-Homos, Autozoned out, El Advanco have extensive DIY chemical departments. I think that Wal-Mart carries the Alemite stuff too. Most traditional or NAPA stores can order Kendall oil. There are two Alemite additives. One is a black lable and one is a red. Make sure you get the red only.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,'04 &'05 First SS/MA in the TENS! My brother also told me about RESTORE. I use 20-50 oil and Restore which helps. I also found that Bardahl additive also works just as well. I only use K&N or Mobil One oil filters as I found they really are worth the price.------------------ reliving youth

Thanks for all the info. So, will 2 cans of Restore + 2 cans of Alemite + 4 quarts of oil overfill the engine?I'll either use a Motorcraft filter or K&N(I like them too).

Yes, you will be about 1 quart over. It will burn off with the blow by you are suffereing, but it will subside within a couple of hundred miles.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,'04 &'05 First SS/MA in the TENS! I had a dodge dart with a slant 6 that I slid a .410 shotgun shell on the dipstick tube to "keep it in" and kept the stick under the hood.

Alex- I have been searching for the Alemite oil additive. All I can find is Alemite CD2 additive, which has the same part number as CD2 made by Turtle Wax. There is no mention of oil additives on Alemite's website. Is this the stuff?

That's the stuff. Alemite CD-2 red. Used to come in a metal can and not that long ago. Alemite must have sold their chemical division to Turtle Wax. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,'04 &'05 First NHRA & IHRA 289 automatic Superstock Mustang in the TENS 06-99 First SS/MA in the TENS 04-03 IHRA division 5 Superstock Champion Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked."
