Could someone translate this NPD-ese for me? According to my catalogue, early '68 alternators had a tear drop boss, and later ones didn't.
Usual story - I have a pile of old alternators, and if I'm going to remove the highly functional Nippon Denso one, I might as well pretend to be concourse.
Thanks,
Simon

I`m not positive is this is what they are refering to or not, but the earlier Ford alternators have a rounded boss for the alt. adjusting arm, where the later units had a square boss. However, I always thought that this change occured later on, maybe more like the mid 70`s, but I`m not sure.

Simon,
Look at the back of the alternators, you should find at least one in your pile that looks like a teardrop shape where the wires are.

I've been mulling this over, too. I remember the older alternators had the rounded adjustment lug like Rory mentioned, but I seem to remember that later alternators had a more rounded shape on the pivot bolt boss.

I guess I need to get my Mannel book or my component identifier manual to see what they say.

Well, I've found one Autolite with a D0 casting and it has a raised tear drop shape (sort of) that runs around the boss that they all have right in the center at the back, and then around one of the wire connectors.
I think I'm gonna drop Rick at NPD a line.

I have an original Autolite alt here.It does have the rounded lug for the adjuster as apposed to the square one. Also there is a tear drop cast into the back of case and there is a terminal(orange) at the point of the teardrop. It also says AUTOLITE in there.

Yup, that's the tear drop all right. It's about 2.5 inches long. I just looked at a pile of Mustang alternators, and it's clear as day on the older ones. On three from 71-3 cars, there's a sort of nondescript shape instead.
