Well i suppose "stuck" is the best word i can think for it. Anyways, at first i thought it was just normal but now i think it might be a problem. Whenever driving my stang, i can NOT get it above 3k rpm. I can flooor it at any mph or gear and it'll go up to about 2800ish. I took her onto the highway and i floored it all the way up to 80mph and i think it barely touched 3k rpm. Now with my car being a 302, i know alot of the power is made up top so wtf is going on? I have a stock C4 and rear-end so maybe its the gears? Im not sure, gimmie your opinions ya'll.

Have you checked to make sure your throttle linkage is adjusted properly, i.e. allowing your throttle plates to open fully?

I had an EGR valve get stuck once on a Performer intake and it kept my car from revving well. The problem wasn't apparent at low speeds and I don't remember the spark plugs fouling at all. I solved that problem by swapping in a non-egr intake.

Another time I had an intake manifold leak which fouled all the plugs on one bank. That was pretty noticeable across the whole RPM range though and was plum obvious when I pulled the plugs.

I had one fail just like you descriped it would idle fine take off like a raped ape then fall on its face at 3k I could ease the rpms to 6500 with no problem in any gear but if i stuffed my foot into it nothing above 3k it would load up..

Could be ignition related like N266 said. Do you still have points? I dont think its the gears, my 289 has stock C4 and stock rear gears and it revs to 4500 easily.

Does it kickdown for you? Can you force it to stay in 1st with your shifter and mash it? what happens then?
We probably need to know how your ignition and fuel supply is set up to really help.

Your problem sounds famliar. Check for a clogged fuel filter also. It can restrict the total fuel to the carb.

i would check the points if you are still using a point setup.

I have a sunpro tac, and i think its working just find. Reads the idle rpm perfectly etc. As far as a clogged fuel line or anything like that i highly doubt my mechanic would overlook that. How can i check the throttle linkage? and i have a petronix ignition. Im not sure if thats still the "points ignition" or not.

take the air cleaner off, pull linkage while looking into carb and see if the bottom "butterflies" open all the way(might have to open choke to see it). When your car is warm and in neutral, try revving it past 3k, and get back to us with what happens. Check filters, mechanics are human just like the rest of us... David F.

that might be emliminated no points with a pertronix, but i wouldn't count it out. i know they do two things "work" or "don't work". i don't know about intermitant like cutting out in the rpm range???

the engine will rev past 3,000 rpm with the front of the carb and not the secondaries. check to make sure they are opening.

Could be like my cousin's Fairlane. When we did as you described, the carb opened all the way up. One of us decided to floor the pedal while the other watched from outside. The linkage needed adjusting.

Pertronix system dont have points just a magnetic trigger. However the reliability of pertronix systems has been bad with me on my car (others have had no problems). Id probably want to try a different ignition (like switch back to a well adjusted set of points) just to try it and see what happens.

What happens if you're in neutral? will it rev up then?
