On my 66 coupe, the quarter panel ornament is kind of dull. Should I get some plastic polish and shine it up??. the grooves where it flares toward the back seem like they would be hard to get polish into. If I wanted to replace,or more thoroughly polish for that matter, how would I pop them out without scratching the paint..do they push out from the inside of the car by taking the interior quarter trim out ?? http://johnsmustang.com/Catalog/1979/[This message has been edited by kwalger (edited 03-14-2005).]

They must be accessed from the back,- one of the nastier parts on a 66. Usually, would "remove" them from the front when doing a car. The "incorrect" way it to insert a wallpaper scraper behind the piece and break the tab.(Not MCA approved-LOL!) If the chrome is age dulled, they are not going to come back to shiny. To remove them the correct way, one must undo the speed nuts that hold them on. On a cv they can be accessed easier but still a pain. Remembering someone posting on a site about making them easier to install by making holes in the window track plate with a hole saw. Then a deepwell could be used to reattach. Inserting a punch through the outer hole, possibly one could dimple the plate from the back allowing a correct hole to be made. On a cv the window is easier to remove and the plate pulled up to access the nuts. If using the new repops, carefully paint the back of them with black paint. This can reduce pitting from the back which could affect the front.

HI. Before removing it, try cleaning your ornaments with baking soda and a toothbrush. Just make a paste with the soda. I cleaned mine that way and I was really surprised with the results. And it was easy to rinse too.If you try it, let me know. Rino

Thanks Rino, I'll try that tomorrow. They arent so tarnished that I want to go through the trouble of popping them out from inside, etc. I will let you know what happens with the baking soda solution
