I am wondering if anyone out there has any information on how to go about getting a title for a car whose title has been lost long ago. I have a Bill of Sale but the title was lost atleast 2 owners ago.I tried "Classic" in GA but they told me that CA, where I live, will not accept their paperwork. Does anyone know of a titling agency who can titl this car in CA for me? Or another option I guess, not sure if it would work, would be to try to title the car out of state and then transfer the title in to CA? Does someone have some experience with this or can shed some light for me? Thanks!

In Nevada here, it's a PITA without a title. I had something scratched out on my title by the PO, and they gave me the run around. I had to find the PO, and the owner before him, to sign a Notarized paper that said they BOTH had knowledge about it. You might have them do a trace to show it's not on any hot sheet, it's like 75.00 and a wait from Hell, when you want it now. That, or trust a Mechanic good enough to get one back in his name for a non payment lein. Otherwise, you are at the mercy of your local DMV, and hope they don't hate their job as bad as the women here do.------------------ William 68 Coupe "Restomod in Progress"

It's a PITA where ever you go. Here in Florida, it's even worse.

Is it doable? Or am I gonna have to sell the car?Think I could get it titled to an out of state buddy and have him transfer the car back to me? Would this require he have the car in his possesion?

Different states have different rules. I don't even have to do smog here, but I've seen threads about other states that do. Contact your DMV/PS and see about filing for a lost title. It will take awhile to do a hot sheet check, and cost some money, but at least you will have a title in the end.------------------ William 68 Coupe "Restomod in Progress"

I'll call them again on manday and see what my options are. Luckily 667 is old enough to be exempt from smog even here in CA~!!!

In Connecticut if I walk in the DMV with a bill of sale, an insurance card and and old CT registration(doesn't even need to be the sellers reg) I walk out with antique tags...this is the ONLY thing thats easy to do in Connecticut...believe me. P.S. no old reg means just a vin check 20 bucks for temp plates and 10 dollars for the old guy at the dmv to walk out to the car.

I found a form to apply for a duplicate title but it requires a noterized signature of the last person to have the car titled in their name and I have no idea who that was, much less how to contact them. Additionally I need the information of the person who last registered the car...I hope there is another option because I have no way to find these people. I wonder what people do when buying a car from states like Ar or NY where titles are not required for cars 1973 and older......
