I have a 69 Mach I with a 351W, C6 trans and a 164 tooth flexplate. IS there a bolt up starter that works on this application? I installed stock starter and all it does is grind. The gear sticks out on the flexplate as well. Solenoid is new, trans is new, motor is new, etc. I just cant makeit work. PLEASE HELP!

Are you sure you have a starter for an automatic? The snouts are different between manual and automatics.------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 351C 4V/FMX/3.25 Open '70 Mustang Convertible 250 I6/3 speed/2.79 Open '72 Mustang Sprint Hardtop 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac Loc '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip

Welcome to mustangsandmore. Do you have Headers on the motor now, or will have them in the NEAR future??? There are some aftermarket starters that kick some amps. Mine has 800, has been on the car for over a year, and has never failed yet. It is smaller than stock, and the snout is adjustable for almost any application.------------------ William 68 Coupe "Restomod in Progress"

I do, but they are are shorty headers. I have not built the exhaust system yet, but I have plenty of room.

I had the same problem finding a starter to work on my car. I destroyed two before I found a solution to the grinding. First, double check the correct model number for an automatic versus the manual. This was my problem. The auto parts guy was sure he gave me the correct one. They make mistakes. I still had the starter engaging on me. In some situations you may need to shim the starter. I started out with two shim plates and still ended up using washers to position the starter further out. This may not be the correct way to solve the problem, but it worked for me. Good luck.------------------ 8F01C120929 1968 Red Mustang Coupe 289 w/Edelbrock 650 Manual 3-speed Hooker headers

Did you remember to install the block plate? (the piece of metal that goes between and separates/spaces the engine and transmisson) I've heard of not installing one cause these same symptoms... anyway food for thought welcome!

I agree, try switching the starter, if they gave you one for a manual try one for an auto. My 351w only started with one for an "auto" when its clearly a stick...David F.
