Alright, still trying to get my hand brake to work. I've put new shoes on the back, had the drums turned, new hardware kit, adjusted the shoes. I've adjusted the e-brake cable until I can barely get the ratchet in the handle to click, and then back the other way, and nothing seems to work for me. With the drum off I can pull the cable tight and I can see the e-brake strut move, but even with the cable at its tightest, the strut doesn't move far enough to get the shoe to expand. When the cable is not engaged, the strut rests/hangs kinda loose between the shoes. With the cable all the way engaged, the strut is tight between the shoes, but it just seems like there's too much space between the shoes, or like my e-brake strut is too short. I can't even pull it manually from under the car enough to get it to spread the shoes. Is that strut supposed to be kinda loose between the shoes when not engaged? Any help anyone has would be greatly appreciated. I'm about to the point where I'm just going to take it to a pro and have them fix it, which isn't the end of the world, but it would be nice to solve this at home. Thanks!

Are you sure all the hardware is assembled correctly?

I'm reasonably sure. I did one wheel at a time and put everything back the way it was. It looks like all the diagrams I've accumulated. That's not to say I couldn't have screwed it up somehow, but I feel pretty good about it. It's just like the parking brake lever/arm (the thing that pivots behind the secondary shoe) doesn't travel far enough to spread out the primary shoe. I can pull the cable until the parking brake lever hits a stop and, at that point, the parking brake link will have made contact with the primary shoe but will not have moved it any. I just read an article on Mustang Monthly's website that said '65-'68 parking brakes never work all that well even when they're working!

Did you change your cables? You should be able to actuate them by just pulling on the cable.

The self adjusters usually quit working as soon as they get a little dirty, but the e-brakes usually worked pretty well.

You might have a 6-cylinder strut in there. It shouldn't be too loose on the shoes, and originally it had a oveal shaped spring.

I did find out a couple of weeks ago that I've got the rear axle from a '65/'66 (and mine is a '67), so I guess there's a pretty good chance I've got the wrong link. The link is in there, but it doesn't get snug until the cable is actuated. Otherwise it just kinda hangs there. I can wiggle it easily with my fingers. I'd say there's about 3/16" of play right now.
Thanks for all the advice, y'all.

ok this topic is aparrently done so i guess i'll steal some of its thunder for my own benefit.

im working on the brakes on my 66, and now im trying to re-mount the emergency brake cable.
i have the things mounted in the clips in the driveshaft tunnel and the prongs mounted in the brake backing plates, but i just want to make sure theres no more mounts im missing. i have a diagram, but its like a 3 year old drew it.

if anybody has a picture of their emergency brake cable mounted on their 66 that'd be awesome. its nice to park your 4 speed and trust that its not going to roll into somebody's grill behind you, so i wanna get this rite.

thanks y'all
