Hi,

I want to replace the stock air filter on my 289 with a smaller, round one. Are these things universal? The car has an Edelbrock intake and 4V carb on it - no idea what model. Do I need to know to order? I went to the Edelbrock site without much success. Any help greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Gregg

Yes they are pretty much universal.
The carb should have a threaded boss in the middle. air cleaners typically use a threaded rod and a wingnut to hold it on, and a round cork or rubber gasket around the carb.

I used a Chrome Mr Gasket air cleaner (very cheap) and stuck on a 289 decal - I think its 13 inches? its a little smaller than my stock 289 cleaner, small enough to clear the large later model style ford motorsport cap and wires on the distributor. Theres some pictures on my web site.

But to answer you simply, yes the round air cleaners are all basically the same.

Indyphil,

Thanks for the info. One other question - what do you do with the small rubber hose that runs into the stock air cleaner?

Gregg most of the basic chrome air cleaners come with a fitting so you can still hook up that hose. Or you replace the hose cap on the valve cover with an open breather.

Scoop is on the money
The rubber hose is for the crankcase breather. Its supposed to inhale air from inside the air cleaner (because its clean) and sucks that air down through the rubber hose into the valve covers. the gasses pass through the engine and get sucked into the carb base by the PCV valve/hose (on the other valve cover). I use a chrome breather cap with no hose hooked up to the aircleaner but I do still have the PCV system hooked up on the other side - it goes into the carb and is not connected to the air cleaner.
