Here's the car-- 1967, 289, 4barrel autolite 4100 carb,a/t, standard single point ignition. Here's the problem-- The exhaust STINKS!!! It smells so bad that when I shut down the engine I have to keep the garage door open for a while or it stinks up the inside of the house! It smells like a combination of burned and unburned gas and exhaust fumes. The tailpipes are sooty on the inside. Seems to point to the engine running too rich. Agreed?? O.K.,now how do I lean out the carb? Are there adjustments to do this on the carb? Do I have to rebuild the entire carb?(the carb has only a couple of thousand miles on it). Plugs(burning a nice tan color, set to .034)),points(set to .017), condenser, cap, rotor, wires, coil are all new. The only thing I can think of is that the carb is a C5ZF-D instead of a C6ZF-C. Could that be the problem? Maybe the wrong size jets for the engine? I'm lost---any help out there Thanks, Jay67fast

If your plugs are a nice tan color, the tune isn't all that far off, unfortunately. The older cars really did push out the hydrocarbons, and if you're used to the cleaner exhaust smell of a newer car, it can come as a unpleasant surprise.------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 351C 4V/FMX/3.25 Open '70 Mustang Convertible 250 I6/3 speed/2.79 Open '72 Mustang Sprint Hardtop 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac Loc '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip

It's been a while, but the 351C in my Sprint used to smell like gunpowder when it was running. I thought that was cool. ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 351C 4V/FMX/3.25 Open '70 Mustang Convertible 250 I6/3 speed/2.79 Open '72 Mustang Sprint Hardtop 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac Loc '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip

At cruise nights I'm the only one in my family. Who doesn't think that exhaust stinks. Even those eye watering super rich cars are cool. I dont know if this will help you but i use to have a stong gasonline smell too, it ended up being that i had tiny (pin sized) holes in the gas tank. Not big enough to actually leak but still there, obviously i replaced the tank... David F.

I have found that diff brand names of gasoline and ratings affect the "smells" . You can try that :0 not that I go sniffing my exhaust . I have the same issue with my car and garage.

I did I've been trying to get my dad to use it in his 88GT. Maybe once we get the T-bucket done. I put some in the tank without him knowing it. ------------------ oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 65 coupe 351w C4 Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. My Pics

Boy, the answers I got sure weren't what I expected (or wanted to hear)!!! This is my fourth 67 or 68 mustang, 2 inline sixes (both daily drivers, one driven for 6 years and the other driven for over 2 years) and two 289s (1 a 2 barrel, which I owned and drove daily for over 9 years and this one, a 4 barrel which I've owned for about 9 months), and this is the first time I have encountered an issue with exhaust odor. I can't believe this is normal. All the other Mustangs never smelled at all. As a matter of fact, the 289,2 barrel consistantly gave me near 20 MPG (highway)for all the years I owned it. This 4 barrel only gives me 10 MPG, whether around town or on the highway. I think something is wrong. Could the 4 barrel make that much difference in the efficiency of the engine? I can live with 10 MPG but even that doesn't seem right; It just seems to me that something is wrong someplace. Any other ideas? Thanks------------------

If it has A/F adjustment screws on the front, you can start with 1 1/2 turns OUT, and take it from there.------------------ William 68 Coupe "Project Under Construction" [This message has been edited by 68 Coop (edited 03-04-2005).]

Sorry for messing up your question. Start with ajusting your A/F mixture. A tuned motor should give you more then 10mpg. With or without a 4 barrel.------------------ oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 65 coupe 351w C4 Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. My Pics

Does the engine "diesel" when you turn it off? I had a car that wouldn't quit running after turning off the ignition and it had a really bad smell, like unburnt gas, even when running. It turned out to be a big vacuum leak on the intake manifold. Something else to think of.------------------ reliving youth

My 1968, 289 smells just like you describe and always has. I really don't notice it until I pull it in the garage, shut the engine down and close the door. I usually leave the garage open a short time and the smell goes away.

Exlocal, You may have hit the nail on the head!!!YES, the engine does diesel, especially when fully warmed up. I just never equated that with the exhaust stink. I'll check for a vacuum leak later today and keep you posted. Sure would be nice if it were something simple, for a change!!! Thanks,

exlocal, Thanks for the suggestion, but no joy. I can't find any sign of a vacuum leak. So, no simple solution for me. I'll just have to keep on trying. Thanks again jay67fast

I thought I had an actual fuel leak somewhere, so was spraying carb cleaner around the intake manifold to clean stuff up and noticed that the engine would start stumbling. All the intake bolts were tight, but turned out to be the intake manifold gasket on this particular chebbie. Good luck. ------------------ reliving youth
