Thanks for the advice about the headers. This car is no trailer queen, so I am going to definitely put some headers on it. I think I can even do that myself. Next question. I am going to drop it off at the shop Friday, to have the rear end gear changed. Currently it is 2.75. The shop is recommending 3.89. I am looking for low end performance more than high end. What do you guys think? The 82 mph in a 55 speeding ticket taught me a lesson.

i dont think id do anything above 3.75's. I got 4.11's and it sucks. What kind of tranny do you have? WIth my toploader im spining 4000revs and doing 70mph. Gas mileage is about 12mpg normal driving, got up to almost 15mpg on a 500 mile freeway drive back in august.. David F.

I just pulled the 3:89's out of my car and I'm installing 3:50's. I also have a AOD in it so that should tell you something. They are nice for a while but after a while you get tired of the rpm's and highway noise. Of course if you are going to the drags on the weekend thats a different story.

Car has stock automatic tranny. Thanks for the advice guys. I will probably go with 3.50 instead.

Tire diameter is a huge factor in gear selection.....

You need to know the total height of your rear tires. If you use a 4.11 gear with a 30" tall tire your RPM's will lower then if you us those same gears with a 26" tall tire.

What didn't you guys like about the 3.89 and 4.11 gears ?
I'm looking into switching my 3.40 gears out for some 3.80's.

I have 4.11s. Gas mileage, the noise, the lack of top speed (i hate only doing 70). Mostly do around town driving. I dont race. Tires are about 25" tall. Not that it rains in San Diego alot but first gear is completely useless if it does. Personally id go with 3.50's or 3.75's if i had the money or what i really want a T-56 (double overdrive)so i can keep the 4.11s and rev really low while i cruise. I like them but negatives outweigh positives in the current configuration... David F.

I've never cruised on the highway above 65 anyways.
I do like to race my car when I can.
I wish you had an 8" because I'd trade you.

The question is, do you want to drive cross country or do you want the acceleration improvements of a steeper gear?

Clevelands need gear to perform best. A 3.89 is an excellent gear for a hotter than stock 351C-4V without reving you to death.

With that hotter cam you were talking about getting, you are going to need that gear or even more.

Actually, the cam is already installed. I drive this car on the weekends. I would like more low end acceleration, but don't wan't to be reving way up im RPMs at 70 Mph.
Thanks

4.11's 4000revs @ 72mph
3.89's 3800revs @ 70mph
3.50's 3300revs @ 70mph
3.25's 3000recs @ 68mph

Thats assuming a 25" tall tire (overall) and 1:1 final ration (no-overdrive). All would be an improvement in acceleration than what you have now... David F.
