Hey, Since I have plans to rebuild the 351c in my 73 I want to replace the original camshaft and I know nothing about a camshaft so im looking for reccomendations about what camshaft to buy. Im not sure how to tell duration and whether to look for mechanical or hydralic lifters?? Like I said i know nothing about camshafts and any help would be appreciated, The motor is a 351c 2v but when i rebuild i am replacing with 4v closed chambered heads and headers with an edelbrock performer intake and holley 4150 carb. The car will also have ram air installed when I rebuild the motor. if u need any more info about the motor let me know. Thanks for the help you guys always give to my newbie ?'s lol

What kind of cam and lifters do you have now??? Alex says solid lifters are the way to go, so you might want to take that into consideration, seeing as how the Money Maker gets off the ground so easy . A 351 should be able to handle a 280. I'm no mechanic, so if I'm wrong, someone will set US both straight.

endgame37,

There are a lot of factors involved in selecting a cam. What are you building, a street engine or race engine? Auto or standard, what stall is you converter if it's an auto, do you have power brakes, do you want a noticable lope at idle?
To use a solid lifter cam the heads will need to be set up for an adjustable valve train.

It's a street engine, I'm not sure what cam is in it now I'll have to dig through the receipts i got with the car. It's an automatic transmission and i need to find out the stall. It has power breaks. Im looking to get off the line faster and as for the heads im planning on using a set of 4v closed chambered heads off a 70 mach 1.

Contact Alex 'Moneymaker',
Call or email Alex, tell him what your looking for. You'll get great advice and a good price on a cam and any other parts you need.

I second that opinion. And when talking to Alex be realistic about how you will actually use the car.

One more ?, Everything i've heard on here tells me that a solid lifter cam would be better then a hydraulic, but it requires an adjustable valvetrain. The heads that I am planning to use are DOAE close chambered heads with what i assume to be the original valve setup, what would i need to replace in the valve train to get a solid cam to work, Also what is the major differance between mechanical, hydraulic, roller and flat tappets?? Thanks for all the help.
