I am in the middle of my new rebuilt engine. I have chosen the following setup:Edelbrock Camshaft with Lifters 2122 Edelbrock Performer Intake Manifold 2121 Edelbrock Carburetor 600 Electric Choke 1406 What kind of horsepower should I expect? No other upgrades at this point. I am considering the installation of Tri-Y headers although I am not sure what impact will it have on HPs. I will really appreciate a response since I am getting pretty hopeful at this point. ------------------ Ricky 1970 Convertible-302-2V-3-speed-Auto

Ok you put more air and fuel in the engine now you need to get it out, headers are the best "bang for the Buck" when trying to make HP,without headers and a good dual exhust system it will be "bottled up".Sorta like wear one tennis shoe and a Loafer

The old rule with small block Fords is that you need to work on getting the air out before trying to get more in. Your engine won't be able to utilize all that new air coming in via the four barrel unless you give it a way to get the old air out.Definately do the headers first. Any talk of horsepower gains would be pointless until you do that. Scott

Ricky I have a 289 in 68. Went from 2 barrel to 4 barrel and it was night and day - and I have no headers. My car is making around 200hp (runs high 15's in the 1/4) 600 carb (like yours) unknown cam but must be stock or close to it stock 66 heads stock cast iron log headers performer intake (like yours) dual exhaust electric fanMy car bone stock as a 2 barrel should be in the 17's in the 1/4 mile and although came with an advertised 190-195hp that was before SAE ratings. It was probably lucky to have 160 REAL hp from the factory. I imagine with your cam, and the extra 13 plus cubes, you are probably making an honest 210 depending on which accessories you have. Headers are typically worth about 20hp, depending on the type. Tri Y headers are made for mid range torque (3000RPM), they dont produce as much low end grunt (1500RPM) or top end hp (6000RPM+) as a good set of long tubes. Some folks call them "why try's" because they are usually outperformed by long tube headers. ------------------ '68 coupe, '66 289 C code engine, edel 600cfm carb, performer intake, dual exhaust http://www.geocities.com/ottouk_77/68mustang.htm

Hi Ricky. Something else you may want to consider is replacing your worn points by an electronic module like a Pertronix II. I also got a great improvement by just replacing the spark plugs by Motorcraft (Ford) original ones. Next will be the coil and new wires. Another 68 here. I did Pertronix points replacement, coil, and headers. What a difference! Not even the same car. The car came with Edelbrock intake and 4bbl. Once we replaced the plugs and did some other work to get the thing running decently it was reasonably quick. Then came the headers, X pipe and duals - BIG improvement. A few weeks later we did the Pertronix stuff - I did it mainly for convenience and reliability, but again ANOTHER performance kick! Better starting, but much stronger performance. If anybody out there knows any other ways to kick it up a few HPs, let me know! Cheers Gregg ------------------ 68 coupe red on black 289 flowtech ceramic headers hedman X pipe flowmaster 2 chambers edelbrock 4 brl and intake Cragar SS with BFG t/a and a working 8 track for cruising days!

I installed Pertronix about 3 months ago. Very clean and much smoother acceleration. ------------------ Ricky 1970 Convertible-302-2V-3-speed-Auto

I installed dual Flowmasters as a replacement to my single muffler system. They are hooked to the original manifold. I wonder what can be the best header for a low price?

Everyone seems happy with Hooker Competition headers. Cheap and good. About $150.On mine, 4bbl Holley made a huge difference, and I was still running factory exhaust. It kept getting better as I added duals and later headers and 1 inch spacer. Otherwise, stock 74 engine. Even low compression liked a four barrel carb. I wish, in hindsight, I had done it the other way around, but I didn't know as much about the small block Ford then. Hell, I didn't have a computer or any source to read up on it.

Flowtech are virtually the same as the hooker comps, for the 68 they are $99, or $200 for ceramics. Lots of folk I knew back in Indiana had run them and liked them - and a bargain of a price. Not sure about your '70 in terms of fit, youll have to check on that...------------------ '68 coupe, '66 289 C code engine, edel 600cfm carb, performer intake, dual exhaust http://www.geocities.com/ottouk_77/68mustang.htm
