Before I WASTE another motor, I would like to have some working gauges on my dash cluster, something more accurate than the suck-at-best OEM gauges...What all are you guys running? Looking to do this in my 65. Currently have the long speedo with a half-time working temp gauge and only an idiot light for oil pressure/battery. Please post links, pictures, or any description would help me out. Thanks! ------------------ '65 Coupe I6 5 Lug Front/8" rear(3.55) & V8 suspension conversion TCP subframes Mild built 302 to replace the six

There is now available in the aftermarket a five-dial cluster that will replace your long 65 falcon style cluster, and the holes are made for bolt-in of aftermarket gauges, specifically autometer. I recently saw it advertised in the back of a Mustang & Fords magazine. Also Haneline make a bolt-in gauge cluster similar to the R-model shelby unit with 6 gauges. try www.jementerprises.com Scott

I really, really like these JME Enterprises Anybody offer similar quality for a lesser price? Cause man these are nice but prices START at $800 bones and probably wouldn't look at home in my Mustang unless I purchased the matching glove box door for an additional $200...

hey thanks scott, I'll try and search around for info on that setup, sounds like what I'm looking for. I've had my eye on those Haneline setups for a while but will have to hold out on those (price wise) for a while at least...

Did a google, found something that looks pretty trick -- a gauge support that lets you put new style gauges in a 65 GT or 66 cluster. Here is a link to Mustang Depot site I saw these on - Mustang Depot EDIT: to fix link [This message has been edited by 65ponycar (edited 01-22-2005).]

I'm thumbing thru my stack o'mags at this moment trying to find it again... A few years ago a did a conversion for a customer from teh long 65 style to the 66 5 dial set-up and I used Autometer Phantom gauges. Started with a used 66 cluster and cut and modified til it all fit nice. I left all the stock wires in place behind the dash in case he ever wanted to go back stock. Added a Phantom speedo, fuel, oil, temp, and volts. Scott

Found it! One of the sponsors of this site, NPD, has it listed in an ad on page 74 of the Feb 2005 Mustang Monthly. Gauge Conversion Pod to mount 3 5/8 speedo and four 2 1/6" gauges into your original five dial cluster. $39.95 Looks like the same one in the Mustang Depot link you provided. Either way, you need to hit M&M classifieds or Ebay for a used 66 cluster.Scott ------------------ 66 Silver Frost GT Hardtop, A- code 66 Raven Black convertible, C-code 95 Black GT convert, Cobra clone [This message has been edited by whiteknight289 (edited 01-22-2005).]

hey thanks, just looking at it I'm wondering why I'll still need to find an original setup? Here is my line of reasoning (correct me please ) I will need: Bezel - trim piece Gauges Support part that you mentioned or like the MD one Some type of "homemade" wiring harness What parts exactly do I need to salvage off the original? and if I do need one, are they that hard to find or average going price? thanks, I'm getting excited about this project! It looks to me like you use their support piece to hold the gauges onto the [i]factory[i/]white metal piece, then the trim bezel goes on. I would think a used up stock original cluster could be found for under $50, I used to sell them for around $25 depending on the condition of the gauges. The aftermarket gauges will come with sending units and there is a small amount of running wires. I would use a volt gauge instead of an ammeter. I would use mechanical oil press and water temp. The speedo from AutoMeter will use the factory speedo cable, and if yours reads correctly now, it will read correctly with the new one. Last is the fuel gauge, when you order make sure you get the one that is for a 10-80 ohm sending unit. Scott

hey thanks for clearing that up for me, it does make sense that I would need to reuse (use) the metal back part... maybe I could doctor the long style to work, na, looks like I should be able to find a correct one.Lots of great info from you, I never thought about which fuel gauge I would need either, probably would have ordered the other one, thanks for clearing that up too. I love this site, always someone out there to go the extra mile to help a fellow member Looks like this could be a relatively budjet friendly project, as long as I don't splurg on the gauges! p.s. thanks for those links to, I'll know what to aim for when I hit the mustang salvage yard...

With the gauge support linked above, you only need a 65gt or 66 front bezel - you do not need a lens or the metal back plate. I have one that I'm in the process of setting up with Autometer Phantom gauges. It's really a pretty slick deal.------------------ My webpage: www.gt350clone.com

Question 1: Support accepts 4ea 2" gauges and 1ea 3 3/8" gauge -- so do you think (has anyone that did this swap) think I could use 4ea 2 1/8" gauges???Question 2: Where can I find 2" gauges? thanks guys

You can buy a repro gauge cluster for about $20-$25. If you have a drill press, buy a forstner bit and save yourself the $40 cost for the support. You use the bit to drill out the gauge holes to accept the autometer phantom gauges (I want to say they were 2 1/4"). It'll be snug, but you can push the autometers in from the front, and then bolt them into place with the supplied bracket. Wire it up, tap into the dashlight resistor, and you're golden. I'd post a pic of my set up, but I didnt use the free hosting site they were on for a while and they deleted my account.Good luck.

apparently my version of the catalog had a typo -- the support does accept 2 1/8" gauges... I like the DIY idea, however since I'm starting fresh here (still have the long style 65 cluster) I think I'll order the support and a bezel, then buy my gauges at jegs
I'll post a picture when I'm done.

Those are the gauges I'm thinking of using. Any chance you can get a photo posted or email one to me?

Here is the one I just put in. I also was looking for the cheap option just so I could get gauges in and working. This one is made of ABS plastic and sells for about 50-60 bucks. And when I say cheap it is cheap. I also started out with the stock 65 dash with lights and made the conversion to full Autometer Phantom gauges. It's pretty clean with nothing hanging under the dash. [This message has been edited by kc65mustang (edited 07-29-2006).]

Do not buy Haneline, nothing but problems with them. Two gas gauges bad, RPM gauge bad plus when you tell them the gauge is bad they want you to send it back so they can check it out then they may send you back another gauge.Had to pay out of my own pocket to get speedometer fixed by a speedo shop. DO NOT BUY HANELINE------------------

not meaning to hijack this thread, but a quick question......IF one were to use an Autometer speedometer.....does it hook right up? or do you have to use an adapter for the cable to connect to the speedo ? Also.....looking at the "kit" mentioned above......my 65 glove box door is concave...the 66 donor I have is flat...anyone seen a concave glove box door that would match the aluminuminuminum inst. cluster ?[This message has been edited by honeyburst (edited 07-30-2006).]
