Well after some thinking and research, i've determined my head selection (unless i can find a great deal somewhere else) is going to be between GT40 heads and AFR 165 heads. Now alot are going to say well there's no comparison, obviously the AFR's are superior. Well take a step into my shoes.
Im 16, affording 1300-1500 dollars heads+ labor (i would never touch the heads, i have no clue even where to begin on how to install them) is very difficult for me. Sure i could save up all summer but next year is my senior year which will make me VERY busy, thus i want to do it over the summer.

I know the GT40 heads are inferior whenever it comes to flow/hp gains compared to the AFR's but.. should i spend the 500-700 dollars on them or just bite the bullet and save for AWHILE and get the AFR's? SInce its my first car im also leaning towards the GT40 heads because with more hp comes more responsibility, and honestly with the AFR's i could have close to 400hp and i dont know if im ready for that. I'd be perfectly happy with a 300-350hp engine. SO please just give me your 2 cents, i hope i explained this well enough.

Id say save for the AFRs. Why buy/replace parts a couple times and spend all of that money when saving up and getting that set up you want can be even sweeter? 350horses is more than enough to scare the $h!+ out of yourself and believe me you learn quick when not to apply too much power (ie. around curves, but thats a different story, i still remember the look on their faces he he). Keep saving, keep practicing driving/ handling your car/power and get what you want later, im 21 and this is my first car too so i know how youre feeling...David F.

If you don't have a short block to go along with the AFR heads you are just masturbating.
Good intake, cam, decent compression, and good exhaust is what you need to see the full potential of the AFR heads.
If you have a stock-ish short block and induction then get the GT-40 heads and have fun with what you can afford.

Mechanic said my block was in great shape compression wise etc. I am probably gonna do the nostoglia cam from Comp cams after my header install. So i should have the cam header and intake combo soon. Ill try talking to my mechanic to see what he thinks. Keep giving me your thoughts guys.

I'm not familiar with the nostalgia grind, but since like me, you're not going for a restoration, make sure its the best grind for your heads/intake/exhaust combo. I love the little (270ish) cams comp sells for daily drivers.

Did you get your rearend upgraded or were you just doing some "thinking and research" back then too?

Don't take this the wrong way - because whether or not you REALLY DO the rearend work or even change your cyl heads doesn't REALLY MATTER. Many of us do some dreaming/planning/chatting about our Fords on this site; that's what it's all about. I'm just trying to 'keep up with the direction you're going' with your '66 project.

Consider this thought: I know lots of folks do things different from each other. But, most folks will tell you that it's MUCH easier, cheaper, and takes less time to get somewhere if you use a map..... In other words, I suggest you should make a plan on what & how you'd like your '66 to be. Yep, write it down! It doesn't need to include time deadlines, rather, it should be a step-by-step progression of changes. THEN STICK TO THE PLAN. However of course, if and/or when new information is obtained, obviously you may need to modify your plan. Just my thoughts.........

Good advice Ryan
Think about what you want as an end product, then choose the order that you want to work in. If you choose engine first then tranny second, its fine if a cheap tranny comes along and you buy it first, just be sure what the finished product will look like.

Im doing my engine first because a great deal came along on a block. My tranny and rear end wont match it at first but thats ok, I still plan on doing it in the end and I know how much its going to cost...

My experience has told me that if you buy the cheaper heads, you will enjoy them for a while but then later youll start drooling over the next stage. You need to try to guess where youll be happy ending up. many folks build an awesome 302. its not enough so they build a 347, but thats not enough, so they build a 408 etc... Its much easier if you try to imagine a goal in the first place, do it once, and then when you get there youll be satisfied.

Your young, and the money will come, so dont break your bank account now and miss out on all the other things. I would try to save for the AFR heads and build the motor you really want, but HAVE patience. Im 27 and I have been dreaming of building a motor since I left college at 21. Finally Im doing it - Patience is the key. In the meantime enjoy what you have.
