Im looking to end up with a nice driver, not a1st place MCA show winner. Whats the difference between the two? Is there advantages of one over the other application and durability wise?

First let me say that the key to a good paint job is preparation and a good base of primer.
Single stage paints are fine for solid colors. Many painters prefer bc/cc (two stage) when painting metalic. SS should be a less expensive and fine for a daily driver. The urathane paints have excellent durability and gloss retention. www.autobodystore.com is excellent for paint questions.

Amen to that first statement!

The guy who painted my '70 agrees with the second statement. He much prefers single-stage for solids and basecoat/clearcoat with metallics. Other than he wants depth with metallic colors, he has never explained why... (to me, anyway).

The concensus with most of the body men I have spoken to is that 2 stage is easier to repair later should you have problems. I know you dont want a show car but I think 2 stage is easier to look after, and with a 68 GT youll want to show it off at cruise ins...

It has to do with getting the metal flake to settle into the paint in a uniform manner. With single stage you're trying to get minimum orange peal, uniform color and shine all with one paint. With BC/CC you do not have to worry about the shine in the BC step. Also you can use a mist coat to even out the color and "depth of metalic" with the BC coat.
Another thing is if you need to color sand a SS, you change the way the metal flakes reflect light, which makes the paint look uneven.

Its actually for my 68 coupe that is a sprint model but I dont think that makes a difference. It probably would get driven more and I plan on changing the engine and trans thats in it now. I was thinking of an acrylic Urethane and painting it Grabber Orange. I dont think there is any metallic in that color.
