so im tired of the original exhaust manifolds on my '65 mustang with a 289, and am in need of a set of headers. something for the street. does anyone make any good "shorty" type headers for the size and year of my car? also, if i was able to get my hands on a set of the 289 hi-po style exhaust manifolds. would they even fit on stock heads, and perform better than shorty headers?

Jace good afternoon,

I bought the HI PO reproduction and bolted them up to some rebuilt 351 Windsor heads. You can bolt them up to the stock 289 head. I also had them ceramic coated in Wisconsin. I did not want to have to deal with blow gaskets and tightening them. I did sacrifice some HP but I am driving on a daily basis and trying to find the best balance of HP and drivability.

I went to 2.25" H pipe and then mandrel bent dual exhaust into Dynomax Thrust mufflers. I get a nice sound when jumping on it but very comfortable crusing.

You will have to change your Z-Bar to a HI-PO Z bar if you have a manual transmission.

Headers nowdays have been designed with modeling software so any header is optimized for flow. Therefore the shorty will perform better. If you motor is fairly stock you will not see a difference. If you start to add intake, heads and cam then dependant on your goals, ie driver or racer then you may want to look at headers. If you go that direction you may want to go all the way and get a complete header assembly.

Anyway some thoughts.

Steve

hey thanks for the reply! i think i'll go with the shorty type headers. im not going to do anything big with the engine. just step it up a little, i want to keep it very streetable. but there is quite a price difference between headers and hi-po manifolds! headers are about half as much. thanks again

Jace,
Do yourself a favor and just get a set of the shelby tri-y's. If you are concerned about clearance and don't want the 4-tube long headers the tri-y's are your best bet. Some shorties in a 65 will have interference with stock clutch linkage.

For a street car the tri-y's will not hurt your low end torque. Ground clearance is not a problem, they will hug the floor pans and have a 2 1/2 collector. Just my $.02 worth.
