I thought I'd throw this out there to get some input.

A fresh 289 with 351w heads, CompCams Extreme Energy 262H, Holley Street Avenger 670, MSD6A, MSD Billet dist.

Timing is at 12 and comes in quick to 33 degrees at about 2700 rpm.

Plugs are Autolite 45's set at MSD's recommended gap of .050 for a motor with 10.6 compression.

I only seem to have 10" vac at idle, and its pretty smooth. Is the low vac because of the cam, the fresh engine, or both?

Any input on the other numbers or parts selection?

I'd try the plugs at .035 gap, see if you can get the timing alittle sooner.
Is the vacuum gauge real steady ?

Thanks for the fast response! I want to test drive this car tomorrow (too much rain today).
Plugs were at the .035 gap with a points distributor, I only went to the .050 based on MSD's info. Willing to go back and see. Motor doesn't have much run time, maybe two hours. Did the 20 minute/2k rpm break in and changed oil and filter afterwards.

Vac gauge is steady within 1". Do you mean base timing or total? I had it at about 8-9 and the vac was even lower, about 8".

The total timing, at least for my motor runs best with it all in by 2200-2500 rpm.

I like running the plugs at .035 but thats just my opinion.

There is great post about plug gap size in the racing forum awhile back. It seemed to me best to leave them at .035.

My vacuum is at about 12 with a 270h cam and 10-1 compression.

Talked with and met with Alex (Moneymaker) today, picked up a set of equivelant spark plugs to BF32, they are gapped at 45 right out of the box and I'm going to try them 'as-is'. Alex educated me on some recent problems that have cropped up with performance hydraulic lifters, especially related to the oil bleed holes. I pulled the valve covers and re-adjusted all the rockers, in firing order, with almost no pre-load....just snug from the baseline. Predicted I would pick up 3-4 inches vacuum, but it seems not to have helped much, still smooth and steady at around 10". Engine sounded a little better. Was in the middle of securely mounting the MSD6A when the dinner bell rang. Will have to save the test drive for tomorrow morning! Maybe that gives me free time tonight to put the exhaust manifold on the 65 coupe project. (see Pride of Georgia post on 6/4/2004).

Tell about the lifter problems ?
I have the comp cams lifts are those the same that you have now ?

I've been thinking about adjusting my rockers to try and get ride of some noise. But the builder tells me it's fine the way it is ?

Thanks for asking, the test drive is going well so far. New engine has about 75 miles on it. Took the car to the Gears & Ears car show on June 27 (gears is obvious, 'ears' is all the roasted corn you can eat all day - a great show!)

I think there is some more tuning to be done, but I'll be patient and wait to see how it runs as it gets more miles. The last engine in this car started to act better when it had about 1000 miles on it.

Now I need to paint the fiberglass hood, racing apron, side scoops and apply stripes. Still need to put in the 3.55 rear, rear shocks, rear sway bar. Have all the parts, but I'm driving it 'as is'. Have 4 wheel Wilwood discs ready to bolt on.

I've got a couple pictures but haven't figured out how to post them yet! Do I need to have them on a website first or can I do a cut-and-paste?

My instinct is to say cam, but a 262H shouldn't be like that. What are the specs to that cam?

Steve,
I was hesitant to use the XE cam with that compression, but I called their tech line and they said I'd be fine.
It's okay, got a definate lope to it but it doesn't feel like it wants to die.

The blue one, yeah, almost!
I've done just about everything on the car except the convertible top. Belongs to my friend Rick, who also has the Emblerglow 66 parked next to it in the picture. We go back a few years and I do all the work on his cars. At that particular show he had 3 of his 4 Mustangs there, he has a 66 GT conv emblerglow, 65 conv modified/clone Caspian Blue, 2003 Anniv Cobra Red...and still working on his 68 GT500KR conv clone (I'll post pictures soon, car is turning out awesome).

I had 2 of my 5 there, the 65 coupe White Knight, our 95 black GT conv/Cobra clone, not appearing was my 66 GT SilverFrost coupe, my 66 convertible - color not decided, originally was Raven Black, and last is a 65 coupe I picked up in Georgia I'm fixin' to sell. Want to sell 2 or 3 of them this summer, I'll keep whatever doesn't go!
