I am getting ready to build the engines for our 2 Mustangs, & here is what I am planning on doing. 302 stock block, replacing the cylinder heads with powerheads sf600 heads, cam from comp cams which is an equivlent to a 289 HP spec cam, edelbrock performer intake, matched edelbrock carb, & jba shorty headders. The 65 Fastback will be running a 87 Mustang GT 5 speed, & the 69 Coupe will be running an 87 C.V. AOD & both cars will have 3.50 rear gears. So what do you think of my combos for the 2 cars performance wise?. Will it work?. Do you all think it is a good combo?. Let me know what you all think as I value ALL your opinions. Thanks.------------------ Mike & Robin Grentus, Owners/Innkeepers A Wolfpack Bed & Breakfast 6700 Rts-5&20 Bloomfield, NY 14469 (585)657-4863 65 Mustang Fastback 69 Mustang Coupe 99 Explorer Sport 00 Ranger XLT Extd Cab 4X4 M&M #- 890 MCA #- 4549 See us at www.wolfpack-bnb.com

Mike I'd look into the Edelbrock heads too. And long tube headers for both cars. Are they both just cruisers ? On the 65 with the 5spd go with more gear, like a 3.70-3.80 range.------------------ SCOOP oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 65 coupe,351w,C4,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. Keep the carb small, 500 cfm. Long tube headers instead of shorties.

Ron, They will both be just cruziers. Why long tube headers over the shorties?. I am trying to stay away from messing with the p/s slave cylinder with that drop bracket as both cars will have p/s.------------------ Mike & Robin Grentus, Owners/Innkeepers A Wolfpack Bed & Breakfast 6700 Rts-5&20 Bloomfield, NY 14469 (585)657-4863 65 Mustang Fastback 69 Mustang Coupe 99 Explorer Sport 00 Ranger XLT Extd Cab 4X4 M&M #- 890 MCA #- 4549 See us at www.wolfpack-bnb.com

Mike the long tubes will give you more low end power. I had shorties for a few years. They were better then the stock manifolds. And were easy to install and work around. ------------------ SCOOPoddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 65 coupe,351w,C4,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. Your power steering already has a factory original drop bracket, with the headers you just replace it with one that is a little bit longer. Its only 3 bolts and usually costs under $20. I'm pretty sure those JBA shorties are more $$ than long tubes with a bracket.

Power heads are good but for a little bit more twisted wedge are the best bang for the buck, even though they are 202 int valved they will boost power and torque even off idle. As far as cams the 289HP cam was good in its day but there are much better modern grinds that will idle better and give more all around power. I'm partial to comp and for a daily cruzer the comp 260h is great or the 268h if you want a little lope. The xttreme grinds are also very good. With a comp 268h or 268XE, rpm or stealth, 600 carb and some goood headers (I am partial to the try-y's as they fit well and perform great and no PS drop required) you can make an honest 375+hp with good street manners and economy. Roller blocks are cheap and all over the place, the stock hyd roller isnt a bad cam at all bolt on some T/W or afr165 heads and the above bolt ons and you can make about the same power.

What do you all think about the edelbrock performer packages? Cylinder heads, cam, intake, & carb all matched up?.------------------ Mike & Robin Grentus, Owners/Innkeepers A Wolfpack Bed & Breakfast 6700 Rts-5&20 Bloomfield, NY 14469 (585)657-4863 65 Mustang Fastback 69 Mustang Coupe 99 Explorer Sport 00 Ranger XLT Extd Cab 4X4 M&M #- 890 MCA #- 4549 See us at www.wolfpack-bnb.com

It would be a great choice.

the rpm is great but in a 302 its a pretty lumpy idle, the performer is pretty good but a bit mild and you would probably want more. I'd say something in between the performer and performer rpm would be about right for a cruiser. If I was building a cruiser with off the shelf parts, 302 9-9.5 compression, total seal rings, something around the 212-218 @0.50 int duration cam, goood heads with at least roller tipped rockers, wieand stelth intake, road demon 575-625 carb or holley projection 670 tbi, try y headers, a good ignition. EFI makes a big difference, frankly i hate carbs now after trying efi, even the hoolley tbi is so much more responsive and the mileage is much better. Stock ford efi's are all over for cheap and the older projections are around too for dirt cheap, I still have one sitting around. weigh the options and $$$ spent, you could get a stock 5.0 efi & trans bolt on a paxton or vortec and have power and economy. I'm all for modern drivetrains in early cars, I'm running a roller cammed tbi injected 351 w AOD in my 67. It hauls ass, idles good and even with the 10" converter on the fwy at 70 I get 21 mpg.
