How would I go about hooking up a vacuum booster? It is not for my car but for a friends car who had a big cam installed and now he hardly has any brakes. He has power steering and power brakes, the car also bogs off the line or when he starts to put his foot into it. I will check the timing and carb, but I really think he needs a vacuum booster and I have no idea how to hook one up. So I will take any and all suggestions you have.

If he has power brakes he already has a vacuum booster, thats the big diaphram between the master cylinder and firewall.

Do you mean something like a vacuum reservoir? They install in series between the engine and the booster and you just mount them on the firewall or where ever you find room.

You can also install an electric vacuum pump if the vacuum level is that poor. {less than 10" or so}

i had yo do this on my racecar because of low vacuum. go to the junkyard and find an old ltd etc. they have about a 2 quart vacuum cannister that looks like a big tomato can. mount it anywhere and get a 1 way vacuum valve from the "help" section at your local parts store. the one i got is a chevy brake booster valve. hook the valve to the vacuum port on your intake where the brake vacuum line normally hooks up. then hook your brake booster line and the line going to the tomato can to the other end of the valve. this will not increase your vacuum to the brakes but will give you more vacuum reserve. helped me a lot.

I don?t know of anybody using this but they make an electric vacuum pump for this purpose. I?ve seen them in Roder type magazines for about $200-$300.

I guess what I am asking about is a vacuum canister, he really does not have enough vacuum to run his breaks properly, he had a very large cam installed and I am pretty sure it is robbing his vacuum. I want to some how increase vacuum for him so his brakes work better, but just do not know how to do it. He said everything was great until this cam went in.

I see that electric vacuum pump in many Street Rod type magazines and they are suppose to solve that problem when someone has installed and engine in their Rod with a nasty bumpstick.

But like I?ve said, I don?t know any body that has used them.
