I blew a head gasket, then I replaced all the gaskets, ported the heads some, put lifers and bigger cam ect. Now my car seems to over heat fast. The new water pump seems to flow more than the old water pump.On the head gaskets I installed them correctly with the part that say s 'front' in the front. But I noticed that the block and heads had water jackets in the rear of the block, so I made some small holes in the head gaskets so that the water can flow from the block to the heads. the previos head gaskets blocked the flow. Previously the engine did tend to get very hot on the highway. Does making holes in the rear part of the head gaskets, and letting the water flow between the heads and block re-route the water flow and make my engine overheat to fast? I have good engine timing, and the carb seems to be tuned just fine. The thermosat is pretty new also. Thanks Rich

Shouldnt have to make holes in a head gasket. The front jackets are blocked to force water throught the block to the rear, then up through the heads. If you are saying the rears were blocked, maybe you didnt get the correct gaskets for your motor. Are you absolutely sure you know the year of your engine? I am thinking you have a newer engine in the car, and the gaskets you ordered are for a '67, which may not fit what you now have. Just a thought.

If I remeber right the block had D4, which should be a 302, the car doers have a 302, I checked the stroke. The heads say 68 302 4v. The car seems to to be put together with mix and match parts. I don't know why, when I bought the car a few years ago, it only had 59,000 original miles. I had to make up a timing pointer, because the timing cover had the pointer on the wrong side, the passenger side. The dampner had the marks on the driver side. The water pump still has the intake on the passenger side.I'll have to do some more troubleshooting, I'd hate to think that making the holes in the gasket, made things worse. Thanks Rich

Two questions. 1) Do you have a thermostat? SBF's get hot very fast without one or at least a restrictor ring. 2) What intake gaskets did you use. The later heads use the larger water port opening.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,& '04 First SS/MA in the TENS! I did use a thermostat, and it does seems to work correctly.I used the intake gaskets that had the smaller openings. I'll take a look at the itake gaskets that were on there before to see what was on there. But the openings in the heads weren't very big. I was wondering if making extra holes in the head gasket messed things up. I didn't see any water leaks either. Thanks Rich

I checked for leaks, and didn't see any, then I put a different radiator cap that I had on, then I put in an extra half quart of oil in the car. The car didn't over heat at all. After driving a few miles, I parked the car and didn't see any leaks. I went in the mall for about 10 minutes, then when I came back, I saw a few puddles of coolant.I looked for leaks, then I noticed that the water is coming from the heater core. the heater core never leaked before, but it probably didn't like sitting around for a few months. I'll bypass it tomorrow and see whay happens. Also my alternator is messed up, it's a 3G alternator, but it is only putting out 12.8 volts max. My car only has a large electric fan from a 95 Ford Crown Vic police car in it. So the low voltage would make the fan spin slower. Also maybe the cooling system needed to get rid of some air pockets. I'm hoping that works, I really don't want to remove the heads again. Thanks Rich
