I have a C4 and just ordered a filter and gasket for the pan. Gotta couple questions, first, is this all I need to change the fluid? Second, what is the best fluid to replace the old with? Also to anyone who has done this, what is the cleanest and easiest way to do this? Hope I have the info for you guys to help out, and thanks for everything. I just hope these questions are'nt to stupid sometimes, but oh well. If you don't know, you ask the people who do. Thanks again.

That's it, and some Type F transmission fluid. You don't use any sealer on the gasket at all. There isn't really a neat way to do it, but if you have a big pan it shouldn't be too bad. A big piece of cardboard on your driveway or garage floor will help alot. Leave a couple of corner bolts in and lower the pan slowly to stay in control of the flow.Don't tighten the bolts too much, the aluminum strips very easy. An inch/pound torque wrench would be handy. ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 351C 4V/FMX/3.25 Open '70 Mustang Convertible 250 I6/3 speed/2.79 Open '72 Mustang Sprint Hardtop 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac Loc '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip

Also add a drain plug while you have the pan off.

Thanks guys, The fluid looks good, but I'd rather be safe. Gotta brand new Click style Torquer, what would be a safe setting or can I go by feel? Just went finger tight on the valve covers, but I got those big long, wing nut style. Anyways, thanks again for the time and info, guys, it is greatly appreciated.

That's probably a Foot/Pound torque wrench right? That's too big. {not sensitive enough} You need an Inch/Pound wrench or just tighten them carefully by hand. ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 351C 4V/FMX/3.25 Open '70 Mustang Convertible 250 I6/3 speed/2.79 Open '72 Mustang Sprint Hardtop 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac Loc '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip

Check on that being a ft/lb Torque wrench, I will just tighten till I feel it bite then go a 1/4 to a 1/2 turn, unless thats too tight. What pattern should I go when I retighten the new gasket down, if any? I am planning on putting all the bolts back and snugging them down, then tighten in order. Any knowledge on this, Steve?

All you'll need to do is snug them down in a crisscross. I don't have much knowledge about it except for doing it a few hundred times in the past 30 years. ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 351C 4V/FMX/3.25 Open '70 Mustang Convertible 250 I6/3 speed/2.79 Open '72 Mustang Sprint Hardtop 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac Loc '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip

Sorry Steve, but 80% of this stuff is something I have never done until now. I (all of us) really appreciate the patience you guys have with us who do not know. I would rather ask twice not to be wrong than have to do it twice. Thanks for the info, just waiting on the truck for the parts. Keep ya posted.

OK, before I beat this to death, my fluid looks the color red that it is supposed to be, and it don't smell like it is getting too hot. The main reason for changing it is, when I go into Rev sometimes, the tranny clicks really fast, like the newer trannys. Now could this be related to the shifter bushings being bad, and not letting it go fully into gear. I'm not really cheap, but if it's not broke, you know? Anyway, all replys are welcome, and I hope you have a 2 cents worth Steve. Thanks

What do you mean by clicks fast like a newer tranny?------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 351C 4V/FMX/3.25 Open '70 Mustang Convertible 250 I6/3 speed/2.79 Open '72 Mustang Sprint Hardtop 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac Loc '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip

Well, the best way I can explain it, when I go into reverse, sometimes only, the trans starts clicking. Kinda like when you do the spoke and baseball card combo. Now it only clicks till it either goes fully into gear or I start to move the car. There's no slipping what so ever, and it don't do it every time. I know I'm not telling you anything new with this thread, but I guess I was hoping you could read my mind. I don't know how to explain it any better, sorry.

I'll tell you what, let me change the shifter bushings, and if it still does it, I'll ask what to do then. Maybe I can get it into words by then. Thanks

I know what clicking you are talking about my dad 2001 Dodge Dakota has an especially bad habit of showing its in reverse and actually being out of gear, so when you let off the brake it produces a terrible grinding noise. It also clicks like you were talking about when you put it into reverse, I'd say its probably not your bushings but if it makes you feel better replace them, if the clicking is a really big deal to you take it to a trusted shop and take a mechanic on a drive with you to tell them what you are talking about.

Thanks 67 Nightmare, it only does this once in a while, and only in reverse. The tranny is very stong, seems to shift too soon, but that's only if I'm creeping along. Just thought that since the bushings were bad, maybe it just was'nt going completely in gear(?) Anyway, planned to do work over the weekend but it did'nt happen, so I'll try again this weekend. I'm thinking, no hoping, the bushings will do the trick. Thanks again Nightmare, I was'nt sure if anyone knew what I was tring to say.
