My (302 4bbl, stock dist,)engine was pinging at highway speeds, especially going uphill (93 octane) I retarded the timing by ear until the pinging stopped. Today I bought a timing light so I could see where I was setting wise. I am not familiar with cylinder numbers, so I hooked the light to the plug wire that said #1, but the light wouldnt work right. Upon closer inspection and looking at a chiltons, I found that ALL the wires were plugged in at the wrong terminals on the distributor. I correctly wired them and now she cranks but wont start. Pulled off the dist cap and the rotor is pointing to the #8 terminal, not #1. Does this mean the distributor was installed wrong, or the camshaft is not degreed correctly?

Somtimes when someone installs the distributor wrong they don't bother to reinstall it correctly, they just move the spark plug wires one terminal over. Not the right way to do it, but the car will run. If installed correctly, your #1 terminal should be in about the one o'clock position and the vac advance unit should be pointing mostly straight forward or at about the seven o'clock position. Another possiblity, but certainly unusual, would be the engine has a 351w cam and uses a different firing order. Did you have to mix-up the wires to 'correct' them, or were they all in the right order, just one terminal off?------------------ MCA Certified Judge, 1965-1966 66 GT coupe A code, Silver Frost 65 coupe modified - the White Knight 66 convert being restored 95 GT convertible/Cobra clone - black with white leather

In my dismay I yanked all of them without looking, if I had to guess I would say they were one terminal off.

This is a coincidental thread for me. I had always assumed that the distrubtor on my 289 had been installed wrong because the plug wires had to be shifted over one location clockwise. I located top dead center on the crank and the rotor points to where #1 should be, but when the wires are installed correctly it runs like **** and won't idle. I'm wondering now if the crank is on wrong or if maybe the valve timing is wrong?------------------ "I started with nothing, and I still have most of it left" http://webpages.charter.net/adragon8u/mystang

from what ive learned with timing a light is not always right. after having two different shops fix my timing i could advance it about 15 degrees and not get any pinging. reset your cap and roter id sayand try the light again. the light should get you there of in the ball park so------------------ 1966 mustang coupe 200ci 3 speed tranny msd 6a ignition, blaster 2 coil, 2 inch exhaust to a glass pac, stock rear,I have the single out header not on yet though, and i have the parts for the cold air intake (homemade). white w/ black interior will eventully have (after years of great prosperity) a 67-69 fastbask (aka dream car)

adragon8u - the harmonic balancer can't be put on wrong, its got a keyway so it only goes on one way. You could however have the wrong balancer, meaning the timing marks are on the right side of engine instead of left, but this is highly unlikely. The valve timing would only be off if someone installed a timing chain without lining up the marks or if the chain was so loose and wore out that it jumped a tooth. ------------------ MCA Certified Judge, 1965-1966 66 GT coupe A code, Silver Frost 65 coupe modified - the White Knight 66 convert being restored 95 GT convertible/Cobra clone - black with white leather

Thanks whiteknight289. I'll just have to play around with some more. Just don't under stand why it would run cruddy with the wires shifted when it "appears" to be in correct. It's probabl not really in right and I need to take a better look.------------------ "I started with nothing, and I still have most of it left" http://webpages.charter.net/adragon8u/mystang
