I just completed a 289 engine build and mounted a c4 tranny. Engine runs great. Tranny is not engaging in any gear. The dipstick shows full tranny fluid. Any ideas why? Anything I should be looking for?

Thanks.

First question, did the trans work before?
If so, it should still work.
Was it difficult to tighten the bellhousing bolts? I don't think your torque converter is engaged with the front pump.

When installing the torque converter for a C-4 you should feel it "slip or pop" in three distinct times. It will look good and feel good with just two "slips or pops" and it will bolt up to the motor as well but it will not work. You may have to drop the tranny if you are not sure. Just as a shot in the dark, do you have your linkage hooked up?

I had a dickens of a time when I mounted the tranny; I remember it took several attempts to get the converter to line up and slide on, etc. I remember at least two "slips" .. but can't say for sure that it "slipped or popped" three times.

I'm still stuck !
I'm pretty sure the converter, flyweel, input shaft, etc are all mounted correctly.

I don't have a fluid pressure gauge, but I did check pressure by disconnecting a cooler line at the radiator, started engine, and was pumping a about a pint in 10 seconds. I was getting a little leakage around the pan seal, and I'm seeing a little leakage at the manual selector (behind the neutral safety switch.

The previous owner said the tranny was just rebuilt. Is there anything obvious in the tranny itself that would make me be getting no gears at all ??
