I am replace all the steering stuff on the car. I found the plug in the steering box and took it out. It looked like old grease in there. So I thought I would fill it up with whatever goes in it. Is it regular type grease or somekind of gear oil??
Thanks
Bud

Hey Bud,
I was told that most gear lubes will leak/ooze out of a steering box. I was told to simply pump a few shots of standard ball-joint gease into my '69 steering box, and like most things, don't "fill" it with lube. So I gave mine a few (5-6) grease-gun shots a few years ago and haven't had any problems since.........

Just my 2 cents,
Ryan

The grease for the vintage steering boxes can be purchased from your local Ford dealer under Motorcraft part # XG 1-C.

whatever you do don't ask anyone at a auto parts store that question. they will try to sell you power steering fluid.

Contrary to what Ryan was told, I was told to fill it as much as I can. There was a thread here at M&M a while back explaining how to do this, which basically involved packing in the grease, turning the wheel to full lock, packing some more in, turning it to opposite lock, etc.
Now who is right, Ryan's source or mine? Of course, it might not make much difference.

Thanks Guys!! Its a drag race only car, so I think I will be ok filling it up with grease. You can see something move past the fill hole when you turn the wheel. I guess that would be the thing to watch out for when filling it up to be sure and get it full. Having the motor out makes it a little easier....
