lol i was coming home from school today and i heard a pop and it sounded like something was inside my hubs rolling around. so i stop and play with the tires and i found it was the right rear. so i pull the tire off and the drum and see the self adjusting cable hanging there and the spring inside the drum and the self adjusting stop half grinded (but able to still be used) my question is how could this happen? and is there any way to prevent it from happening again

For this to happen the self adjuster must not have been fully engaged in the slot in the shoe, or the tab is bent out of shape. If the spring and things have been ground down then I would suggest replacing them. You can pick these items up at any parts house and they are pretty cheap, brakes are something you do not want to take any shortcuts on.

Were the brakes recently worked on? Someone may have put the self-adjuster on the wrong side of the car. Everytime the trigger tried to adjust it, it was getting looser instead of tighter. They are usually marked on the end "L" or "R", left being the driver side (in the USA anyway).
