Aren't all fastbacks 2+2's? I've never seen a '65 or '66 without the spare seats... was there a true 2-seater available?

All fastbacks were indeed 2+2's. - 2 adult seats, 2 joke seats - right through the early years. My 68 is definitely a 2+2. Ford only used it as a logo on some models though. There were no 2-seater Mustangs.

Except for the Shelby R Models. They were 2 seaters. But they were race cars. The rear seat was replaced with a fiberglass "cover" that held the spare tire.

It was my understanding that the 2+2 fastback name was used for cars that had the folddown rear seat option, it was a 2 seater when the seat was folded down and the folded up was +2 seats.

Can anyone confirm Ronnie's idea for Mustangs? I don't know enough about 65-6 cars.
But it wasn't the case with other 2+2s that I know of. The Jag E-Type 2+2, for example, didn't have a folddown rear seat. 2+2 in general use just meant 2 adults and 2 midgets.

2+2 in the Auto industry was a very over used term in the 60 & 70's.

Some 67 Mustang's had fixed rear seat instead of a fold-down, so it was only a fastback. I think Ronnie is correct, you have 2 seats, plus 2 more when you flip up the rear seat. In 69 they changed the name to 'sportsroof'.
