Hi all,

I'm cleaning up my dash and trying to get some old black paint specs off of my gauge lenses. Soap and water and goof-off don't touch it. Any suggestions for removing them without scratching up the clear plastic ??

Thanks.

John.

Nail polish remover will probably work, but I do not know if it will dull the finish of your lenses. It will be interesting to see some of the answers, it will be good information to have.

I think some good solvent would do it as long as you are careful. Paint thinner might work too or if they are too bad you could always buy new ones.

I used a soft plastic putty blade to remove some spots from a gauge pack lens. As long as you don't get too aggresive it did work.

Beat me to it! Just soak them in it and it might just lift off over night. If not a fingernail should do it after the Pine-Sol softens it.

Actually, metal polishes have a mild abrasive that works well for cleaning/polishing plastic. Chrome polish may be a bit too abrasive and leave very fine scratches but brass polish (Brasso) works well. I think it's about the same as the #2 Novus product.

I use brasso for removing scratches from radio lenses and it works well.

I've had goof off melt some plastics so I don't try that unless it's a last resort.

I never tried the Pine Sol but it's good to know. I'll give it a try sometime.

I guess if enough products that work are listed the less likely it'll be that you have to buy something.

Oh yeah, I've heard toothpaste has a mild abrasive and can be used for polishing plastic too. I never tried it but if I were out of Brasso I'd give it a try.

Good luck.

I've used toothpaste to polish plastic gauge lenses and it works great.

Thanks for all the great feedback. For the record, I did try a finger nail. I'll give the pinesol a try followed by toothpaste. Would that be the whitening tootpaste, sensitive or good old fashion mint

Depends on what breath you want your car to have.

If the paint is on good, it may have to soak for a while. Most of the time an overnight soaking does it. I had a piece that was real stubburn that I had to soak for a couple months before it came out perfect, but it usually works real well.
