Hi again
here is my question the temp sensor wire is connected to the sensor at the front of the engine and t stat. Now there is also another sensor thats on the water pump at same location but the sensor has like a coil spring at the end of it. What is It?? there is not a wire on it.
Thanks in advance

Yep. Springy thingy. Also could be a doohickey.

Seriously, one sensor is most likely for a gauge and the other is for an idiot light. My Cleveland only has one (in the block by the t-stat) but I built it from a shelled block and used aftermarket gauges.

Cheers,

Rick

Some clevlands had a temperature "switch" for the distributor vacuum mounted on the water pump. This was used with the dual diagphram distributors.
I think you had one advance curve with the engine cold and one with the engine hot.
I just plugged that hole on mine.

Yes it does have the dual diagphram distributors and the port colsest to the cap is pluged. Do you know what that vacuum switch would be call if i were to look for one? I am trying to put this car back to its correctnes. 65% of the vacuum lines correct and others were pluged. The aftermarket vacuum diagrams are of no hely and not worth the money I had spent.
Thanks Joe

It's called a thermostatic vacuum switch. If you need one, I probably have a couple extras kicking around....

Distributors having dual vaccuum diaphragm vaccuum advance.

There are two lines; advance and retard:

The advance hose pulls the diaphragm (normal vaccuum advance schema) when connected to the carb's timed vaccuum port.

The retard hose is switched by the temperature switch such that vaccuum arrives only when temperature is up (warm engine). This connection serves to equalize pressure on both sides of the diaphragm hence retarding total advance. Source of vacuum can be raw vaccuum or timed vaccuum depending on how much retard is wanted.

thanks
I do understand what you have said about the vacuum lines. so i would guess on that vacuum switch there are electrical connection that one wire goes to the disconnected sensor on the water pump and maybe another to complete the electrical circuit?
Thanks
Joe

Joe,
The two do not connect at all. The switch in the block has a wire connected to it that goes to the temp gauge. The Thermal vacuum switch has only vacuum hose connected, no wires. Look at a vacuum hose diagram for your year model and it will show you how tha hoses should be connected.

Thanks for your reply Ron
It appears that this has gone off track from my orginal question. which before your reply had left me with more questions since Jeff indicated my second sensor gets hooked up to that vacuum switch.
Another words I'm back to square one now.
Joe
