I have an early 1965 mustang convertible that I want to add seat belts in the back of the car. The rear seat belts were an option back then. I see in the catalog of Texas Mustang page 15 they offer a seat bolt anchor plate. Has anyone ever used one before? Are they needed? The sales rep said I need four of them. I had to buy something that is not needed. I am sure someone has installed rear seatbelts in the back of the car? Please advise. Thanks

Welcome to M&M ! If you are installing rear seat belts for cosmetic reasons only, then you can omit the anchors. If you plan on having passengers in the back seat that will use the belts, by all means put them in.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,& '04 First SS/MA in the TENS! Yes, I planned on using them to carry passengers so I am installing them for the real thing. I heard of a person whom drilled through the car and use a tap and die to make the hole and put the bolt through it to tie the seat belt down.I see where they sell anchor bolt plates in several mustang parts magazines. Do you have to use the anchor bolt plates or can use a tap and die drill to make the hole. Does the anchor bolt do anything beneficial to holding the seat belt down to the car over the tap and die method.

Taping into the car's metal will not give enough thread depth to resist the force of a body pulling on the bolts during an accident. In addition, the anchor plates spread out the force making their ability to resist force much greater. A really good rule of thumb when there is a question about Mustangs is to follow MoneyMaker's advice. HTH

My rear belts ('65 fastback) simply have a large, thick fender washer on the underside of the sheet metal behind the rear seat. The washer is not welded to the car. Bolt passes through seat belt anchor, body sheet metal then fender washer before nut is attached to bolt from underside.

When I installed mine in my '65 fastback, I used the extra large washers that came in the kit. I got it from NPD I think. Anyway, I cut slits just outside of the center hump and also ran the other half of the belts down the sides between the seats and trim panels.
