I spent 8 hours today scraping, washing and sanding the engine compartment. And it still looks bad you guys that have taken the time to detail your cars are my nuts. I've been trying to find a better way to route all those wires. I put it all in black wire loom not sure I like it ? I'm going to do some more sanding and then shot it all semi gloss black. Any tips how to make the wiring look better ? It was kinda fun standing in the engine compartment.------------------ SCOOP oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 65 coupe,351w,C4,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. My Pics

Oh yeah Scoop....I spent a few hours a day for a couple of weeks sitting on a old rolled up quilt strategically placed on the cross member sanding, wire brushing and applying paint remover. Lots of fun...huh ??Heres a cool way to hide your engine compartment wires buddy...I've been considering this myself... http://jr.stangnet.com/hidden.htm#top ------------------ What makes men chase women they have no intention of marrying? Funny thats the same place I was sitting today too. I'm always in such a hurry to get the sanding done. I'll look into the wiring idea not sure I'll do it that way yet or not ? I think BigD did something like that too. His engine bay looks awesome with no loose wires.------------------ SCOOP oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 65 coupe,351w,C4,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. My Pics

Scoop I found it much easier to use brush on paint remover than trying to sand anything in the engine compartment. Its messy but it gets you back to the original surface for a "brand new" look.------------------ 1968 mustang j-code sprint.13.69@101 306cu.in, stock ported heads, weiand exellerator,650 holley DP,hedman hedders, comp 292 Magnum cam,4-speed,8 inch 4.11 detroit locker http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy.html

Generally speaking the wire looms should be removed. The wrapping should be removed the wires and connectors cleaned then the bundles carefully re-wrapped. Terminate the ends where possible with heat shrink tubing. This gives them a clean look you can't get by simply wiping them down. For my '65, I knew I wanted to add wires to the harness to support electric choke, air conditining, audio, T5-Z neutral safety switch and back up lights, etc. I planned the changes, adding wire and connectors to the harness assemblies. Hardly anyone notices the fact my harness has four connectors at the fire wall vice the normal two. Moreover, I did AutoCad drawings of revisions so the next guy would find the changes less than mysterious... [This message has been edited by Jeff (edited 02-19-2004).]

Not sure how far I'm going to take this yet. I might just stick all the wires into large black wire looms, or I might just get new wiring for the everything forward of the the firewall. I don't think sanding whats left will be to bad. I not going to go crazy in the areas you won't see once the motors in.But I will clean and repaint it all.I started taking apart all the conections and cleaning them and making sure they were all still tight. ------------------ SCOOP oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 65 coupe,351w,C4,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. I've been tearing up an engine compartment in a '68 GT500 and a '68 fastback. I found out that STP heavy duty brake cleaner will strip all that gunk out and strip the paint down to bare metal. Then I've been taking a wire wheel on an air wrench to get the tough stuff. Works really well. If all else fails....sandblast the heck out of it!!!

The only problem with all of these chemical removers, brake cleaner and so on is, even though they work great if you do not clean up afterwords properly the primer and paint will not stick at all. it just turns into a mess and you end up having to sand it anyway. I did mine with just a ton of elbow grease, some cold beer and an air wheel. It took some time to do it, but it turned out great and no problems what so ever with the primer and paint.EDIT: Make sure to tape off and mask the windshield as the small particles that are floating around will get into the windshield gasket and it will cause problems, I was told this by a glass guy. He said the particles will contaminate the seal and cause leaking down the road, I did not do mine because I pulled all the glass out of the car, but I don,tb think your are pulling your windshield. ------------------ JOHN 65 FASTBACK 2+2.....14.44 @ 107mph 1/4 87 TAURUS WAGON 03 F150 XLT SUPER CREW 4X4 SHORT BOX Member:Vancouver Island Mustang Association M&M #1710 65 FASTBACK 2003 F150 XLT SUPER CREW 4X4 [This message has been edited by johnmustang (edited 02-19-2004).]

I used many cans of brake clean and some sanding pads, on either my old drill or air wheel. I then take paint thinner and wipe it all down before I put the primer on. I get brake clean from the Chevy dealership some how CANS of it end up at my house. ------------------ SCOOP oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 65 coupe,351w,C4,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. Good tip John, I cover it with a large drop cloth. Right after I had a new windshield put in I was doing some grinding on the dash. The grinder slipped and dug alittle grove into the brand new windshield. It was a leason for me to slow down. ------------------ SCOOP oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 65 coupe,351w,C4,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. My Pics

This is also true for the glass itself if you ever grind or weld. Those red hot specks of metal (sparks flying) can get stuck in the glass and will rust. Best just cover it all up to be safe. ------------------ '68 coupe 289 C code 66 heads, edel 600cfm carb, performer intake, dual exhaust http://www.geocities.com/ottouk_77/68mustang.htm

This is where I mean that I'm out of my league here. I wish I had the space/tools/ability to pull the engine long enough to do the bay and a few things on engine while it's out. I envy you Ron.------------------ http://webpages.charter.net/adragon8u/mystang

This is something I have to do in the near future. You guys might try some oven cleaner over engine cleaner. I found out that works real good. And cleans up with water. Buy the good kind not the cheap stuff. I have some before and after pictures of the rearend I just finished. You would be surprised. It only took 2 1/2 cans to get all the grease off it. lol
