My car was bastardized with one of those tacky pop up sunroofs. I've gotten various advice from weld metal in the opening and cover it with a new vinyl top. Car currentlly has a vinal top but I was hoping to shed it when I got to the paint stage. I was told the whole roof would have to be replaced to do it as by the time you welded metal in and filled all the deviations the whole roof would be filler. Does this sound right?

Thanks,
Don

I think your best bet is going to be to weld in a patch panel. If you just cover it, you are asking for trouble. Whether or not you need to seam in an entire new roof really depends on how straight the existing one is. Most likely, all of the damage is located around (within 8") of where they cut it, depending on what they cut it with. So with a good flange weld, you should be okay. I would seam seal the snot out of it from the inside though.

Cheers,

Rick

Oh, and another thing...

You can minimize the amount of filler by doing regular body straightening. Heat, hammer and dolly, stud pulling etc. will be your best friend. Just take it slow and patient.

Your post reminds me of a Mustang recently seen. Friend bought '66 Mustang fastback for restoration. Soon found lots of corrosion so sold it and got another; this time a '65 fastback. He was proud of his purchase saying what an easy restore it was going to be. Here's the word picture. '65 fastback; poorly done restomod. Car has crappy moonroof among other modifications. Grille has been swapped for Shelby "R" front but the headlight buckets have been swapped with a GM car with rectangular headlights. One set appears in fenders and another set in grille area; lots of bondo fill in gaping holes. Rear has been tube'd and huge fender flares have been added to the sides; these are not done smoothly either. Car is relatively free of rust but OMG what someone's done to this little car is a shame! I'm waiting to see what my friend does with this one...

I thought of another thing this morning on the way into work. Have you pulled out the headliner to see if they cut the roof brace to put in the sunroof? If so, you are in for more work. If that is the case, I would make sure the car is bolted into a rack to keep it from taco'ing somewhat when you start cutting.

Here is a link where a roof section is getting replaced. Different location, but alot of the principles would apply:

Rick thanks for the info and link. Based on the roof picture and where my sunroof starts it looks like just behind the roof brace. If I decide to tackle the body/paint this year I'll pull the liner out and verify. This winter has been focussed on hp and driveline.

Thanks again,
Don
