Can anybody tell me how I can fix smoke from the defrost and heater in my 1965 mustang 289. When the thermostat opens smoke pours into cockpit from heater and defrost even in off position. I don't see that heater core is leaking, but maybe.

im gonna say leaky heater core it might not be smoke it might be water vapor. if theres a hole in the heater core then it will mist and go all over your windshield. is there a residue on your window does anything feel moist? open your trap door on the heater box is there water in there that you can see? remove the heater box unbolt it from the fire wall inside the engine compartment and watch the coolant hoses they might not go to far and youll have to remove them. if the heater core is at falt let me know i have one for sale brand new in box for like 20 bucks or somthing.------------------ 1966 mustang coupe 200ci 3 speed tranny msd 6a ignition, blaster 2 coil, 2 inch exhaust to a glass pac, stock rear, single out header, cold air intake (homemade). white w/ black interior

Thanks, I am a rookie. It could be water vapor. Would it smell like coolant boiling (it doesn't).

I am assuming that you mean steam and not smoke. If it truly is smoke you have a serious electrical problem and should not drive your car until you repair your wiring and check your heater motor. I really am sure you mean steam and if this is the case just replace your heater core because it is pooched and while you are at it check your heater plenum and replace if necessary ( new ones are cheap and made of very durable plastic)also you may as well change your heater hoses if they are at all suspect. Do the hoses now because they are a b!tch to do after you have done your core, because on the 65`s the core has to come out again to change the hoses. It is not a real hard job just very finicky and a pain in the a$$. Also before you replace the core and after you have it out attach your heater hoses together with any kind of plumbing connection and thoroughly flush your cooling system and make sure it is good and clean before running your coolant through the new heater core. This will take car of your problem.Oh, just about forgot welcome to M&M ------------------ JOHN 65 FASTBACK 2+2.....14.44 @ 107mph 1/4 87 TAURUS WAGON 03 F150 XLT SUPER CREW 4X4 SHORT BOX Member:Vancouver Island Mustang Association M&M #1710 65 FASTBACK 2003 F150 XLT SUPER CREW 4X4

yea it is a pain but the best bet would be to drain and flush the system. its easy and a good thing to do plus you dont have to worry about pouring coolant on your floors. start the car turn on the defroster and touch the window if it feels slimy like coolant then the core is probably bad. it should smeel like coolant if it smeels like elecitrical burning then turn the car off the blower motor could be bad. im guessing core. p.s. welcome to m and m ------------------ 1966 mustang coupe 200ci 3 speed tranny msd 6a ignition, blaster 2 coil, 2 inch exhaust to a glass pac, stock rear, single out header, cold air intake (homemade). white w/ black interior[This message has been edited by trashline (edited 02-14-2004).]

It must be steam, the fan motor does not have to be on for it to steam.

Take the two heater hoses and tie them together. If the problem goes away then the heater core is leaking. If not, then you know to look for something else. It should smell kind of sweet if its leaking.
