I have discovered that I will need to take my stock 1967 289 heads to the machine shop to have them machined to accept bigger valve springs for my new retro roller cam. The heads had new valves and stock springs put in about 2 years ago. While they are at the machine shop would you recommend that I have anything else done to them to improve performance? Or would I be better off looking for a new set of replacement heads? I am looking to increase performance but also keep it on a budget. I don't want to break the bank on a new set of aluminum heads but I also wasn't impressed with these same heads on my last 289. The rest of the engine includes a holley 600 cfm, edelbrock performer maifold, flat top pistons and hipo manifolds.
Thanks for all the help.

Remove exhaust thermactor bumps, that shouldnt cost too much and helps flow. No-body has told me how much hp its worth though.

The heads are stock. I had them on another engine and I am swapping them over to another engien that I am building with a retro roller cam. The cam spec call for a larger than stock dual valve spring so I have to either have these machined or move on to soemthing else. I was thinking since they will already have to go to the machine shop what would be wise to do them. However, I don't want to sink a bunch of money when I would be better of going to some kind of aftemarket head.
Thanks

Crane makes a conical spring that does not require machining.
