I'm just curious, I think, 'cos this looks to be out of my league. I'm back in England, and this guy's advertising a 71 Drag Pack SCJ 429, best offer. I call him up and he's asking 22,500 pounds!!!!!!! He swears he hasn't plucked this figure out of thin air. He's basing it on prices in the US. After I hung up, I got to thinking maybe he doesn't know the US $ has gone down the tubes. A year ago, that would have been the equivalent of $31,000. Today, it's more like $41,100. Either way, it's seems overpriced to me. Anyone have a ballpark figure for a restored car? This one's been restored, not original - I can tell that from the pics. But he says it's numbers matching, got a build sheet, etc. Thanks, Simon

Simon, to be fair its a lot harder to find mustangs in England so that drives the price up regardless of exchange rate. Just like the cost of an old landrover is crazy here in the US.I know he was "saying" that he was charging equivalent US prices. But he should really be charging a little more than the equivalent US price. Someone wanted me to buy a 71 vert from London once. it was a real crappy rusty shell with a worn out 302 and he wanted i think about 3-5000 pounds (5-7000 dollars) My memory is bad but the point is it was a basket case and would barely fetch a couple of thousand dollars here. ------------------ '68 coupe 289 C code 66 heads, edel 600cfm carb, performer intake, dual exhaust http://www.geocities.com/ottouk_77/68mustang.htm

A restored '71 429 SCJ Mach 1 is about a $25-30k car in US dollars, from what I've seen. He must be using a Barrett-Jackson pricing guide. ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 351C 4V/FMX/3.25 Open '70 Mustang Convertible 250 I6/3 speed/2.79 Open '72 Mustang Sprint Hardtop 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac Loc '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip

Depending on th model and options, a Mach would sell in the high 30's by the NADA book, I know of a drag pack Mach 4 speed that recently sold for $38,500. There were only 613 Drag pack cars built 4 speed and automatic combined. I do not think his price is out of line. I know I would not sell my sportsroof for any less. ------------------ Bob Member#39 71 J code 429 SCJ-R Sportsroof C6 4:11 http://www.mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/Bob429.html [This message has been edited by Bob429 (edited 02-04-2004).]

Well, he sold it before I even got to have a look, for the equivalent of $34,500. I was in serious danger of bankrupting myself, so I guess I should be happy

Oh no, the game is still afoot! Got a call from the guy himself, not his assistant. Turns out he's a dealer. The car that went for $34,500 was a "mere" CJ. The SCJ Drag Pack is still on the lot! I think it's time for a Kevin Marti search, before I make the long haul to Sheffield. Keep ya posted.

Well, it was the real deal, a 4-speed SCJ. I spent two days going over that car with a fine toothcomb! Overall it was in excellent shape, but the block had been swapped for a standard '71 429 block. I was sure when I pointed that out that he'd drop the price a little, but no deal And a few footnotes to end the story ... 1) The clutch on that thing was a bear! Maybe it's true what they say about early American manuals behind big blocks. I wouldn't want to drive it in traffic! 2) The muscle car scene is alive and well in Yorkshire, in case anyone's ever visiting / shopping! They have two drag tracks nearby, that's why. 3) Lock your cars up at night! With the dollar currently holding the same value as the Argentine peso, British dealers are scouring the States and coming back with your finest!
