I just spent a weekend repairing the cowl leak in my 66 coupe(see "no more leaks") I'm still sore from it, but it can be done. There is also a section describing what I did on my web page. Good luck and let us know what happens.------------------ http://webpages.charter.net/adragon8u/mystang

Yes, there's supposed to be a gasket-like seal where the wiper shafts go through the cowl. ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 351C 4V/FMX/3.25 Open '70 Mustang Convertible 250 I6/3 speed/2.79 Open '72 Mustang Sprint Hardtop 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac Loc '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip

That's it. On an early Mustang, it goes in from under the dash. You remove the wiper arms, unbolt the wiper shaft stands, and they drop into the car and you replace those gaskets from under the dash.------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 351C 4V/FMX/3.25 Open '70 Mustang Convertible 250 I6/3 speed/2.79 Open '72 Mustang Sprint Hardtop 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac Loc '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip

But wouldnt that still let water collect in the cowl area?? I mean the seal would stop water from leaking down the wiper shaft. But wouldnt it get under the cowl grille piece and sit there?? I have been trying to figure out how to seal mine up water tite.

On the older Mustangs the wiper transmission is inside the passenger compartment, the gasket seals water from coming in the under dash area. Water still enters the cowl area, that's what it's designed for. The water enters the cowl area, and flows down to the sides and drains behind the rear of the fender.------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 351C 4V/FMX/3.25 Open '70 Mustang Convertible 250 I6/3 speed/2.79 Open '72 Mustang Sprint Hardtop 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac Loc '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip

been there, tried that. It's a waste of time and energy and you wouldn't be happy. If it's not leaking now, just remove your fenders and clear the drains so that water doesn't sit. While you have the fenders off and have access to the drains you can try to spray some por15 in there with a wand to prevent future problems. Then use your cowl cover to keep leaves out when parked under trees. If you are still unhappy with the cowl cover and want to get rid of it, let me know. ------------------ http://webpages.charter.net/adragon8u/mystang

The open space around the wiper shafts where they poke through the outer cowl will allow water to enter the cowl area. It's the same chamber space that's covered by the slotted vents in front of the windshield. That's why a cowl cover alone will not prevent water from entering the cowl; particularly if driving in the rain. Those wiper shaft holes in the outer cowl are something that has to be carefully lined up when re-welding the cowl back on after the "big" repair job.------------------ Bernie Frank 66 Fastback restomod (12.8 @ 112mph) 85 GT (preserved) 2000 SVT CONTOUR
