I have had a problem with my 351c 4-v for sometime now.I am fouling plugs faster than I make money to replace them.Black dry soot on them. There is a stumble I cant get out of the midrange.I have a new Holley 650cfm vac sec
#4160...pretty basic setup.Stock ignition system. I took the stock manifold off to replace with alum offenhauser and when I turned the manifold over it spewed gas on my shop floor.....No obvious leaks.float levels are good...no fuel from the vents either.I have replaced everything and it still runs to rich.Power valve perhaps? I am at 6000 feet (Colo) Anyone out there had this type of problem?

Engines do tend to run rich at altitude, but it sounds more serious than that. I cant say I have experience with your problem but it really does sound like a leak.

Is your throttle shaft loose?

The shaft bushings are good and tight. No slop...it is a new carb.I have looked ddown the carb throat while engine is off to see whats happening. I cant see any fuel making its way into the manifold.

Sounds to me like it's leaking. Did you check the floats set them so the gas just starts to come out of the holes. Also what jets are you running ? I live at 4500 feet I had to jet the carb down to get it not to run rich. Does the car smell rich when at idle or cruising it. Could be a stuck needle too. Have taken the bowls off and clened them out ?

I agree...does sound like a leak.I have takin both bowls off and checked needle/seats.The fuel level is just below the sight plugs. This car idles perfectly.Remember the old commercial where they balanced the egg on the idleing ford engine? Thats me ! (mid 60's commercial)Doesnt smell bad till I put some throtle to it then its definatly way rich. Stumbles just off of idle till 3500-4000 then it cranks.

I am currently fighting the same sort of problem on my 75 Bronco. Same carb with the same symptoms. I rebuilt mine and the problem hasnt changed. It is much worse when cold. So much to the point that the engine will just cut off when you burp the gas. It is really rich and blows rich smelling smoke once ot warms up. I wish I had the answer lets hope someone does.

This may be way off base, but when my car had the bad vacuum leak, the plugs had the black soot on the plugs you speak of.

I m running the stock jets the carb came with...#632. Thats not the usuall Holley jet numbers but thats what they are...I physically pulled them out and looked. I emailed Holley to find out about that but havnt heard back yet.I cant say I looked at the discharge nozzle for a size. Also vac at idle is steady 14. Seems low to me but friends say thats ok for this altitude.Doesnt waver or bounce arount at all.I have looked hi and low for vacuum leaks and certainly havnt found one thats going to do this. I have replaced every hose on this beast. Also got a new PCV valve and no luck.
