I'm starting to put together the pieces to redo my 289 in the '66. I came across a pretty good deal on some 351 heads (thanks, Fishtail!) with a 5 angle valve job, bare. I'm looking into what pieces to put together with that set of heads. They are 1.94/1.60's. I really want a car that will give me a mean idle (lub, lub, lub), but is still very driveable on the street. I want it to be strong, but I probably won't see much if any track time. It's a weekend toy. Anyway, I'm looking for advice on cams. I read the archives and there's some great detail about what the specs mean, but not having driven the various lift/duration combinations, I'm having a hard time applying that information to what it would do in the car as far as driveability.

I'm also concerned about the amount of lift. I can also pick up a 1.7 roller rocker set, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that 1.7's are too high for this engine. I have stock spec (it has been rebuilt) pistons, so I'm worried about valves hitting the pistons. Anyone give advice here?

Dave I'm not a cam expert but I've asked enough question to know that I need to ask more questions.
So with that said, I'd vote for the 270H cam. You'll hear some cam at idle and will have a nice power band.
As for the lift they are .500 lift which I'd think would clear stock pistons.

Comp Cams (or any cam grinder) will tell you to do a piston/valve clearance check. With 1.7:1 rockers, it'll put your lift closer to .530

That, and along with the substantially larger intake valves trying to clear a piston machined for 1.78 intake valves, you've dramatically altered the clearances. Chances are you'll be fine, I'd still do a p/v check. Just my $.02

I just installed the 270H cam in a 1969 351W can't wait to bump it over. Maybe this weekend. Seems like a lot of people choose that cam.
